Friends List Problem: No Profile Pictures

I'm using Steam for Mac OS X, and I've noticed an issue recently, aftere the most recent Steam update: I can no longer see profile images in the friends list. It's not even the "?" images, they're just not there; and it's a little confusing and offsetting trying to traverse my friends list without the images, as I have quite a few friends that I recognize by them. The same problem is happening with my groups. Does anyone know what's going on?

In the friends window hit the Friends \/ dropdown menu and check "show avatars"

I don't have a dropdown arrow next to Friends, anywhere on Steam; including in the friends window, the friends button under my name in the top left, nor do I see any settings for it under "Preferences".

On the top left corner in the middle of "View" and "Games" you have the "Friends" section. Click it and select show avatars.
