CoD 4 : MW - retail CD Key on Steam

Hello , back in 2012 I bought Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare , for Mac, on eBay, installed and played. I now want to bring the game in my Steam game Library. I tried the "Games>Activate a product on Steam" way , but I get the message :
"Invalid Product code

The product you entered is not valid.
Please double check to see if you mistyped the letters..... blah blah"

Now, I'm positive I have not mistyped (tried many times also , to be more sure , different combinations , though I'm not blind , I can clearly see if Q is Q and 0 is 0).
So the CD Key is valid and original , WHY I can't add it on Steam?
I mean , I bought it once, right ?

Either a) not activable on Steam or b) it is being entered incorrectly. Only two options.

the code was never meant to be redeemable on Steam? That is up to the publisher...

i dont think the retail version ever activated on steam.
