Older versions would no longer work anyway. Steam only starts with the most current version.
Well that's weird. Bc the newest version doesn't work on my PC. But a backupped 'older' version that I still had on my flashdrive work perfectly.
Ironic IMHO.

Steam always checks for an updated version on startup and downloads the latest when available.

Well for some reason, the older version that I have skips the updater...
Maybe the 'update check' was only implemented recently?

Nope, that check is present for several years.

Even if you install the very first release of Steam, it will still need to update. If you are trying to get the older GUI, there are many Skins for that.
Weird... I must have a bugged version backupped then?
That, or one of my friend patched it or something. Because I can't recall ever doing that myself.

Steam patches itself to the newest version before it starts. You dont do anything and cant turn it off.
Its more likely that your Steam is up to date and you just did not notice it.

Delete the binary and use one from Official Source. The Steam Client as stated earlier requires latest version. There is NO reason to use an older version.

Well if I download the latest version of Steam, it goes to the updater, and then nothing happens.
The older version skips the updater completely, and goes straight to the login...
Is there a way for me to find the version no. of Steam?

Right click the Steam.exe in your Steam installation folder. Under DETAILS it should show the version number.
Mine is 4.5.3.68

Mine says 4.5.22.7, but i'm using the beta branch.
I see the problem! The older version checks for updates 'after' I logged in.
The newer versions do it beforehand.
