Controller issues(Steelseries Stratus XL)
Yo Steamers!

I am trying to get some help here, seeing that Steam Support takes eons to answer you.

I bought a Stratus XL Controller and Bluetooth Dungle for my PC, as I read that The Witcher 3 is "better" to play on a controller. I can easily pair the controller to my PC(and it is succesfully paired, as I can use it as a mouse on the PC) but the issue comes up when trying to use it for Steam.

I have tried to launch Big Picture Mode, enter Controller Settings but it says No Controller Detected. I have tried to enable the xbox controller config in the settings aswell(seeing that the Stratus XL is paired as an xbox controller) still nothing. Steam support tells me to look on the on-screen pairings guide, but there are none. I have checked that the firmware for the Stratus XL is up-to-date, and the drivers are correctly installed.

I would love for someone to help me, as I am going out of my mind!

I have been having the exact same issues. I hope someone has a solution to this problem... as of right now I am sincerely regretting wasting my money on this piece of junk. I have a massive headache from trying to figure out just what i'm doing wrong here.

There's a forum dedicated to the Steam controller/firmware/software that is probably better suited for the issue

I don't have the link at the moment, you can find it through the store page for the controller

I have been in contact with Steelseries about this problem, and no solutions so far. They told me, the problem I might have(still have to test it though) is the Wireless Bluetooth Reciever i bought. I have a HAMA Usb Bluetooth Reciever, and they told me it might not work. I will post something here, when I find out more.

I don't see how that forum would help, when the controller I have isn't a Steam Controller.

but it does need to run through the firmware/software embedded into Steam... and I believe there are specific instructions for doing so that are more easily found there.

Unfortunately not. I gave up after trying almost every solution I could find. But please do let me know, if you find a solution!

I got this to work by doing the following. Also I had to try a different cord to get it to detect it as well

1) Download and install CCleaner (it's free): http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard

2) Go to ‘Tools’ tab -> Uninstall
Find the SteelSeries Engine and uninstall it.

3) Go to the ‘Registry’ tab on the left side -> scan for issues -> fix selected issues

4) Re-download the latest software from our website. If prompted, select 'SAVE' instead of Run: Http:/www.steelseries.com/downloads
NOTE* DO NOT USE A PREVIOUS INSTALL FILE

5) Try cabling your controller to your PC via the micro USB port located in the battery compartment. In the Engine software (https://steelseries.com/engine/latest/windows), see if there is a firmware update needed.

I just got my Steelseries for Christmas, this was the first steelseries product I have had, and I installed the latest Steelseries Engine. I was having issues getting it up-to-date, but eventually found a working USB. After doing that, I was having the same issue with Steam not registering.

I did find a solution that worked for me, not sure if it would be the same for everyone, but power-cycling it worked fine (i.e. the old turn it off and turn it on again shtick), Now Steam registers it fine, and I've been able to use it.

Found this out from Steelseries Support - specific page I searched for

I've had similar issues. This is what worked for me with Windows 10:

Firstly, you need to allow this application through the firewall - go to your firewall settings and add the Steeworks software as an app that is allowed private and public access (tick both boxes). The controller actually has a micro USB slot in the batter compartment - plug it in using a USB cable. The software should now detect it. You can now use it as is , albeit connected via the cable. To get it to be recognised via blue tooth, do a firmware upgrade - this can be done via the steelworks software. Once the firmware upgrade is done, disconnect and restart the software. Connect it to windows 10 using bluetooth discovery. You should now have a fully functioning Bluetooth controller. Why they don't explain these issues or make it known in one place in their forums or documentation is beyond me. I'm running a cheap USB bluetooth dongle btw. This took me about 10 hours to sort out. Whilst it was annoying, the controller is a very nice product and works well if you persevere. Don't go for the uninstall/reinstall the software or reinstall blue tooth drivers, these I believe are band aid suggestions that dont work.

For anyone still encountering this problem:

1. Download SteelSeries Engine, install it and open it.

https://steelseries.com/engine

2. Perform a firmware update:

https://support.steelseries.com/hc/en-us/articles/223302307-How-do-I-update-the-firmware-on-my-Stratus-XL-for-Windows-and-Android-controller-

a. Find a micro USB cable, and plug it into the back of your controller
b. In SS Engine click to download the new firmware.
c. After it's finished remove your controller, and remove the controller from the paired Bluetooth devices list.
d. Repair the controller.

3. Turn the controller of until the controller turns from "connected" to "paired", and then turn it on again.

That should now work in things like Big Picture Steam

I know I had already updated the firmware and was still having an issue at when I first got the controller - oddly, when I set everything up on my new laptop (bought last month), it seemed to register fine - not sure how (It was a clean install, I didn't transfer my data across from the old laptop, except my external drive holding all my Steam Games, to save me redownloading them).

As it is though, I have completely given up on the SteelSeries Stratus XL these days, ended up buying an XBox wireless controller. I've been having pretty severe issues with the triggers for a while, and in other games it is a pain to get the controller to work at all (specifically Assassin's Creed 2, but that may be an issue on the game's side). The trigger issue varied from being irritating in some games (Making it difficult to load specific saves, or navigate parts of menus where the triggers act as a Page Up/Down function for lists (i.e. the Item/Equipment Menus in various RPGs), as it will constantly try to skip up/down the list), or difficult to play at all (specifically FFXV, when driving the Regalia, though I imagine any driving game where the triggers are used as the Accelerator/Brake. In FFXV, the Regalia would always try to brake, even during auto-drive with me not pressing anything at all. Makes it rather difficult to get around at all)

I had this issue for a while and figured it out. Not all usb cords are type 2 or 3 compatible. I tried a variety of cords until I put one in and it the gear engine recognized my controller.
- In short: it could be the usb cord causing the problem
