Does System Restore remove malware?
I did a boot-time scan after Avast went insane in Google Chrome, and some malware infected files in the windows folder, so I restored to a point a day before I got infected. Everything seems fine so far - Avast is did a few things but it is working. I will probably set that antivirus to its most aggressive settings for now on. Process explorer doesn't show anything suspicious running... Think that I'm fine now?

I am running WIndows 10. The malware in particular is simply named "VBS Malware-gen".

Update: It looks like a whole lot of Avast users are having this problem right now, so it is likely a false positive (a very big one at that). Didn't hurt to do system restore though.

EDIT: Probably stop using avast.
Here is a free antivirus that is not annoying in my experience: https://www.bitdefender.com/solutions/free.html (looks like it got an update now so who knows, worth a shot)

Restore does what it says, it could remove malware but it could also put it back if you had malware then and not after.

Best option is probably to reformat the PC.
Alternatives:
Do a scan with https://www.malwarebytes.com/ , it's free.
Free anti-virus scanner: https://www.vipreantivirus.com/support.aspx (scroll down to VIPRE Rescue)
Use both of these, leave malwarebytes installed and scan every now and then.

Optional more advanced alternative: https://www.reddit.com/r/TronScript/wiki/index Read everything it does before using.

I do plan on getting malwarebytes, along with Sandboxie. I am fairly certain that I was not infected with anything before the restore point. Even so - a lot of Avast users were having the same problem I was having. It turned to be a false positive, and was fixed in the lastest Avast update.
