You can still find keys for the game in several online shops. Those you can still activate on Steam.
Also, if you own the game you can still download and play it like any other Steam game, you just cant buy it anymore directly on Steam.

It should say about DRM in back cover, if there is any. Steamworks retail games telling about Steam activation.

Looks like, it's a Steamworks title. Seeing Steam keys sold around grey market.

Hopefully it will come back again to Steam store. This is 2nd time for vanishing from Steam store.

Yes it will work and you will be able to download and play it.
For example, a few weeks ago i bought a retail copy of the old "Prey" from 2006. That game hasnt been on Steam for years. But the key still worked and i could download and play the game from Steam.

Hm I have DVD-ROM of Prey and it just use serial key during installation. After that I play it with disc inserted in drive but no Steam involvement at all.

You own the non Steam version on DVD then. Around that time most games had a Steam and a non Steam version. With " i bought a retail copy" i meant i bought a Steam key since several web sites still sell the Steam version even if its not longer available on Steam directly.

I have a physical copy of Prey (spanish version) and inserting the serial into Steam added the game to my library, so it will probably work for yours, if you want it here.

And no, it isn't the Steam version, I could play the DVD without Steam and the serial doesn't have the structure of a Steam key.
