Also, if you own the game you can still download and play it like any other Steam game, you just cant buy it anymore directly on Steam.
Looks like, it's a Steamworks title. Seeing Steam keys sold around grey market.

Yes it will work and you will be able to download and play it.
For example, a few weeks ago i bought a retail copy of the old "Prey" from 2006. That game hasnt been on Steam for years. But the key still worked and i could download and play the game from Steam.
You own the non Steam version on DVD then. Around that time most games had a Steam and a non Steam version. With " i bought a retail copy" i meant i bought a Steam key since several web sites still sell the Steam version even if its not longer available on Steam directly.
I have a physical copy of Prey (spanish version) and inserting the serial into Steam added the game to my library, so it will probably work for yours, if you want it here.
And no, it isn't the Steam version, I could play the DVD without Steam and the serial doesn't have the structure of a Steam key.
