In game overlay not working (most games)

The Steam overlay isn't working for me in most games any more. Spent ~11 years with using Steam and this is the first time I've had any trouble with the overlay.
The only thing different is my new GFX card, which was bought for me by a friend for Xmas. It's an XFX RX 480 8GB.
I hadn't noticed the overlay not working in most games because I tend to use it sparingly, use other software for screencaps, and until recently had a second monitor.

Google and Steam discussion search didn't yield any results relative to my hardware changes, I also searched for my new specs specifically, including CPU and MOBO but that returned even more diluted and less usefull results.

The only major departure from the norm for my rigs is the AMD GPU, I was wondering if any other AMD users have experienced any similar issues and found a fix. Or if it's not related to the card at all can anyone point me in the right direction? Cheers.

P.S. softwares are the same between my last few rigs as well with the exception of the Graphics drivers, obviously.

I don't mean to offend you but have you checked if the steam overlay is enabled in the steam options, those things tend to be overlooked as too obvious of a problem. Also you can enable and disable the steam overlay for any specific game, so check the game properties too.
If it is the first time this happened to you try restarting Steam.
And some older games may not support steam overlay (Civilisation 3 if im correct) but don't take my word on it.

No offence taken, basic troubleshooting is here for a reason But yes that was my first thought, followed by double checking individual games.
I've done several restarts of Steam, I've been having the issue for a while but having gone without my second monitor for a while I really want to find a fix.

I'm doing a clean reinstall of AMD Drivers/Crimson software and asking a (very busy) techie friend who uses AMD as well.

The games I've been playing most recently are Dark Souls II and III. I think I remember a while back some people having issues with Dark Souls II and the Overlay, can't say for III since the my issue pre-dates my first playthrough.

Also there has been reports of steam overlay not working if certain software is running in the background ( https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9394-yofv-0014 ). Do you have some software that you started using recently, maybie it's causing the issue.

That should explain it. Rivatuner, which is required for certain aspects of Afterburner.

But still the overlay worked then, I even have screenshots of the Steam overlay and the Afterburner overlay at the same time.

When I wake up I'll disable Riva/Afterburner and test a bunch of games.
I've used Afterburner before as well, maybe I never used the OSD though.

In any case thanks a bunch. I'll report my findings tomorrow.

It worked haha. I am utterly perplexed, after using the OSD to monitor my new GPUs performance the in-game overlay was working fine.

But it's working again after disabling rivatuner.
