I think it's the Steam VR update it's self that's causing the problem.
I've been unable to resolve the issue, best guess from online searches is that it's a problem with the USB port on my ASUS motherboard and I need to use an external PCIe USB card. Apparently a common issue with ASUS motherboards? Although, strange, that is only started recently. Not like I had recent hardware changes.
I've gone through a lot of attempted fixes too:
- Disabled USB power management (in Steam VR and in Window's Power Settings)
- Tried a different USB port
- Reinstalled the USB drivers
- Reset the Vive controllers, re-updated their firmware
- Repaired the Vive controllers
- Switching between Steam VR beta and stable (back & forth)
My current best guess is that this was caused from the Steam VR update last week, but not sure how it caused it. Otherwise, it's a hardware issue.
Since my controllers just "turn off", it's not like they lose traction or have lagging or visible problems prior to turning off. Literally, one second I'm in the middle of using it, shooting at something in a game, the next second I hear the πower off tone and the controller is off. I have to hit the system button and the controller comes back after a few seconds, but it'll happen again and again.
Both controllers have the problem, occasionally they both turn off together but that isn't as common as them turning off separately, generally they take turns too, one will turn off, then the other another 30 seconds to 5 minutes later. Sometimes I can go 20 minutes without an issue, other times they turn off 20 times in 5 minutes.
Really destroys the ability to enjoy a game or the Vive. On the fence about returning my Vive, as I've had it less than a month. Still, it was working without issues for several weeks when I got it, then just suddenly started happening.
I am back to thinking it's a problem with the latest SteamVR update, but cannot confirm that. I guess I might try reinstalling my OS, to see if it's another piece of software or drivers causing an issue.
For me, it seems Steam VR was telling the controllers to turn off, likely due to some latency issue, disabling auto-off fixed the issue entirely.
I all so hope that they do a new update soon to fix the last update that stuffed us all up.
Still, I'm slightly glad that this appears to be a firmware issue, and not just my controllers dying from all those accidental wall slams.
