Generic controller support
I'm using a 3 in one adapter for gcn,ps2 and xbox controllers in steam. It works great, however steam sees each controller as the same device. So when you first plug a generic controller in, it has you map buttons, I initially mapped them for a ps2 controller. now I can't use my gcn or xbox controller because its not mapped correctly for those two controllers. is there any way to make multiple presets for each controller? or even a way to delete the preset I already made so I can make a new one? can't seem to figure it out

UPDATE: when both a ps2 and gcn controller are plugged in, steam does recognize 2 controllers, however it sets them both up with the same ps2 controller config I made. still no way of editing that config http://imgur.com/a/skU2C

I don't believe Windows itself has built-in software for mapping generic controllers. Did the adapter come with any software? Running that again might work.

Okay, so in Big Picture Mode if you click "Settings" (or the gear icon), then "Base Configurations", then "Big Picture Configuration" (or desktop, depending on what you want) you should have an option to export your controller set up, as well as browse existing ones. This won't be seamless, but it should be possible to create a profile for each controller, and load it using the configurator.

thats not quite the same thing. When steam big pic. first recognizes a generic input device, it has you go through a button mapping process so steam knows what button does what. base configurations are configurations on top of the set up configuration you do. I can change those all I wan't, but I can't change the setup config for some reason. for example, the a button on my gamecube controller does nothing, since there is no a button on the ps2 controller. I can't map anything to it since steam doesn't recognize it as a valid input...unless I can figure out how to completely reconfigure it again as if steam has never seen it before

If there is no way to change it, that seems like a massive oversight by valve. That would suck to mess up configuring one button on a new generic controller and essentially have it turned into a paperweight since steam wont let you correct it :/
I see. What I would suggest in that case is going to "Settings" in Big Picture Mode, clicking "Controller Settings" and removing the tick in the box labelled "Generic Gamepad Configuration Support". Now unplug the controller. Next put the tick back in the "Generic Gamepad Configuration Support" box. Finally, plug in the new controller. Steam should now ask you to set it up once again.

Unfortunately I don't think there is a faster way to do this, as Steam seems to recognize the adapter as the controller, regardless of which controller is plugged in.

It still recognizes it as the same controller and loads the same preset without option to change it in any way :/ it must be stored locally somewhere? maybe if I figure out where I can just manually delete it?

It's a bit odd, because windows detects completely seperate controllers? I can even use all 3 independently in an emulator?
I'm sorry, I'm honestly not sure what else to suggest. The controller configurator is relatively new, so there is not a lot of documentation yet unfortunately. This is a long shot, but using the instructions above try unplugging the adapter itself from your PC rather than the controllers, maybe even plug it into a different USB slot.

Yeah I'll mess around with a few other things, but I'm not sure there's much to do other than wait for an update, thanks for the help anyway

Possible fix: Delete everything but steam.exe and your steamapps folder. Re-run Steam.exe. This will re-install Steam and should probably reset your config (I haven't tested this but in theory is should work.) A little bit too much hassle for me, but if anyone comes by this issue, here you go. there really should just be a simple edit button for this.

Close Steam
Go to your steam installation folder - If you use the default one it should be: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\config\
Open config.vdf with notepad++
Scroll to the bottom, delete the line with the button configuration, it should be something like: a:b1;b:b2;y:b3 or something like this.
Save the file.
Open Steam again.
Now you are able to redo the first button configuration after ticking the box on the controller support and clicking on the controller name.

I've had to do the same as I initially messed up my D-Input Arcade Stick config on this "one-time only" configuration screen.

I hope we can have a button to revisit this screen without this hassle on the next update.

Just wanted to let you know I was stuck on this for 2 hours before finding this post which helped me fix my issue in under 10 minutes. Agree wholeheartedly that this really needs it's own button in the ui. Thanks!

You're welcome!
I was also stuck on this and after finding the post I knew I had to spread the word!
Is there a way to report this feedback directly to the ui devs?
Oh god thank you, I got a usb adapter with two ports for my old PS2 controllers, which are the only controllers I have that aren't wrecked. I got it to work with two or three games but only one of the ports worked. I tried fiddling with the bigscreen config bs, and my bindings where just a mess, it was stuck moving to the side and there was no way to hard reset the bindings on the UI, I wanted to scream a lot.

now I can play with my two ps2 controllers gladly, thanks a lot!

It´s weird that 2 years after this steam still hasn´t adressed this problem, it would be so easy to fix for them.

Maybe they didn't had the time 'cause they are working on HL3 LOL JK
