There are many games that generally feel better playing with a controller opposed to playing with mouse and keyboard. And some games are just somewhat unplayable without controller (Dark souls for example).
In the end it comes to personal choice but nearly every game i play that isn't a first person shooter i play with an controller.
I received a steam controller for free from valve early december and it absolutely improves gameplay experience in so many games. Whether it works consistently? I play wired and have absolutely no problems, wireless is always a little finicky with any device.
Missed the 'steam' part in steam controller and thought we were talking about regular controllers here. Still the same opinion of a controller being amazing for many games!
The DS4 might be the best second option for you if the lack of two sticks is a downside for you.
The DS4 can do mousestuff on the pad I think?
