Steam tells me I have a 4mb connection when I really have a 12mb one?
When downloading a game, a popup comes up on your screen asking if you want to proceed and start downloading the game, in that popup it also estimates the time it will take to download based of your inetnet connection (which it also displays in the popup), however the connection speed steam thinks I have is wrong.

The popup window tells me I have a speed of 4mb/s, but when I actually proceed and start the download, it tells me in the top left corner that it's downloading at a rate of 12mb/s.

Why does steam assume my speed to be 4mbs when it, clearly is 12?
How can I fix this?

wifi or hardwired? have you done a speed test?

That display never worked right for me. I have a 6 MB/s connection and it shows me " this download will take XXX at 174 kb/s".
Just ignore it and look at the Download screen after the download started.
It will show the correct speed and rest of time.

I have wired connection, speedtest shows 105 mbps. I'm 100 percent sure it isn't a problem with my connection.

Wonder why they don't fix it...

Try this: Settings>Downloads>Display download rates in bits/s.

Doesn't solve my problem. It is already set to the same measurement thing as the actual download speed is measured in.

It's not fixable really.

Your computer doesn't "know" how fast your internet connection is. Even your Router doesn't know how fast your download is, it only knows what kind of connection you have to your ISP (like VDSL, etc.) but it doesn't, and cannot, know how your ISP regulates your bandwith.

So these estimates are never right. They're just the computer making an educated guess from past experience and your settings.

But if it estimates from my past experiences it should be telling me 12 mb/s though, right?
But I guess it doesn't really matter if I can't fix it.

I believe my steam still think I use ADSL connection as well, which I don't.
But I'm not sure how I can check that.

Why is this a big deal? Its giving you the accurate 12 MB/s as you want it to.

No, it's not giving me 12, it tells me I have a 4mb connection, which is wrong :P

And it's not a big deal, just wanted to know if I was the only one having this issue, seems like I'm not the only one.

And what setting is that?
Is the checkbox checked or not?

it's unchecked, I prefer it being measured in bytes and not bits.

Thats not the same as you use to say your internet speed is though..
It sounds like you possibly mixed the speeds up here..

Can you clarify what your internet speed is? Maybe link a speedtest image of it?
Or try this site: http://fast.com/

See if you just say mb/s you are not being specific enough so use the number from that site or link to speedtest. (click share)

the "estimated download time" in the pop up is never going to be correct. it even varies for each game you try to download. i have seen it tell me 1,024kb/s and just now 6MB/s when i tested it.

the only thing to worry about is what the download actually is. mine right now peaks at 15MB/s on my lowered (poor right now) connection.

According to the site you linked I have a 120 mbps connection.
And I believe that is around 10mb/s.

I don't think I'm mixing anything up?

I do know the difference between bits any bytes, I believe 1 byte is 8 bits.
