WiFi causing lag spikes?
Hi guys. So recently, I've been getting frequent lag spikes in my games (probably 1 after every 10-15 minutes of gameplay). My fps isn't dropping, just that my game froze for about a second or two.

Later, I figured out that my computer wasn't the problem in this matter considering I do have a pretty decent gaming laptop. After browsing through several websites on how to solve this problem, it is safe to say that it os due to my internet. At first, I couldn't believe it as it wasn't affecting my computer back in windows 8.1 (I had absolutely 0 issues regarding to lag spiking in games). Ever since I bought a windows 10 gaming laptop, this happens which really ticks me off.

I've tried several solutions to solve this problem (for example; disabling background apps and many more). Unfortunately, non of them seems to work for me. My wifi that is connected to my computer has an upload speed of 17mbps and a download speed of 18mbps (via speedtest). This bothers me considering I've tried the same speed test on my phone and I'm getting much better results than this.

I am no expert in this kind of stuff but I'm leaning towards my wifi usage for steam as my main problem. Almost 95gb of wifi usage is mainly dedicated towards steam which I don't really understand why.

So, if anyone could give me a brief explanation to why this is happening, please leave them in the comment section down below. Also, please suggest me ways to fix this problem, I'll make sure I'll try them all.

Thanks for reading and have a nice day.

PS : I did a discussion about this before in my previous forum thread but I decided to do a new one since I was not being specific there.

Lag spikes and game freezing arent the same. So what are you talking about?

Your game freezing has more to do with your laptop doing something instead of the game. When you bought the computer, are you just running it as you bought it or did you tweek it (e.g. turn off the Indexing Service)?

1. Why do you think wifi is causing the freezes?
2. Have you tried disabling the wifi adapter and seeing if the freezes still occur in single player games?
3. GTA:V (which you've played recently) is a 65GB download and you own other games too so 95GB of wifi usage doesn't seem remarkable really.

Edit: Also, if your game "froze for about a second or two" then your fps is by definition dropping. For a second or two it went down to 0 fps.
Yes I did, I'm not experiencing any sort of lag spiking in offline mode. Also, my bad for making a bad estimation for my game freezing for about 1-2 second. Basically, it freezes for about half a second, people can see me moving, shooting and what not in online mode, just that it "lag spikes" for about half a second or so. No fps drop is recorded during that time frame.

You need to do a test. Get an Ethernet cable and directly connect to the router.

My bad, the problem is not about game freezing, it's just about lag spiking.

Alright, thanks for the suggestion. I'll make sure I'll do that once I got my hands on an ethernet cable.

Remember to turn wifi off when you get hold of a cable and test it out. :)

Eram is right, trying Ethernet is the best bet in this case.
