Unplugged the external drive with the Games on

I have all my games installed on my external drive to save some space on my laptop and I unplugged the external drive. When I plugged it back in I had to reinstall one of my games i accidentally started the download without recognizing it.
I stoped the dowload and tried to start it from the folder where the game is installed, but it wouldn't work so I had to install it again.....
I also tried to link the folder again but it still kept downloading it.
Can you guys help me from preventing this for the next time I unplugg my external drive ?

Simple: Just keep all your games inside the Steam folder, on the external drive. Set that up right now and you'll be free of the problems you're having in future.
