Steam not recognizing my microphone
I'm using an Asus Xonar Essence STX with a Turtle Beach X12 headset since i broke my good headset yesterday.

The problem I'm having is that my sound card picks up my voice with no problem, but yet when i go in to CSGO or Steam settings and click "TEST MICROPHONE," I can't hear anything.

Yes, I clicked "DETECT AUDIO DEVICES" and yes, it says the correct input. No my mic is not muted, and no, the levels are not turned all the way down.
...And no, there hasn't been a driver update in over three years.

No, no you can't, don't do it again, did your headset come with 2 jacks in addition to USB, some devices just need those for any microphone to function right.

yeah it has the mic, earphones, and a USB plug, and i plugged the USB in. trying different ports didn't help either.

There is nothing to do from Steam regarding this; it never worked that way.
It's all on the side of Windows Playback/Recording.
All you have to ensure in Steam is that the Mic is selected there.
And that the volumes are setup well.

Well if it's connected via USB, then u are bypassing your Audio Card; just use the Analog connection(s) if it has that.

I am using the analog connections. the USB is for power (amplification). my soundcard's I/O are both selected as default. my soundcard picks up my mic just fine. I can literally see the levels change in the Windows "sound > recording" properties window when I speak into it... however, when I open Steam settings and click "test microphone", it doesn't pick anything up despite my soundcard being the selected device.

Recording > locate the correct Mic
There are two selections for set to default; do both of them.
Disable all others.
Then click "Finished" in Steam

Audio Devices > select Microphone > Set Default

Audio Devices > Recording > Microphone > Properties > Check Listen to device box > Make sure Playback through device is set to default/whatever you wan t> Apply

Talk and you will hear yourself in windows.
DON'T change anything and load up CS or any other game
Test mic I you should hear yourself now. After testing go back to Mic properties and uncheck Listen to device > Apply.

Again, there are 2 "Set to Defaults" for the Mic device, apply both of those.

Using a headset..
My xonar just doesn't like steam when Analog out is set to 5.1. I HAVE to use headphone if I want to use steam chat. If Steam's voice setting test works you should be good to go.

You don't set to 5.1 unless you actually have a Speaker Setup for 5.1
Most Headsets are Stereo
If you want surround in headset, you enable Virtual Surround; which pushes surround sound down to Stereo; so you can still here those extra channels when you don't actually have them.

I smell what you're stepping in Motha but that's not the point. Xonar doesn't automatically switch to analog headphone mode if you've been using the 5.1 setting. The OP didn't note his normal listening setup (for me it's cranked analog 5.1) so that was a headsup just in case he's similar.

Ok then you switch Windows Playback for Speakers to 2.1

Also most aftermarket Sound Cards from say ASUS or Creative, the software should have a "Switch to Headphone Mode when I connect that device"
some (like Creative) even have a "Mute Speakers upon Headphone connection"

no, there's only one.
if i select "set to default" on "line in" it completely ignores "mic in"... and vice versa. that's how it's supposed to be.

this didn't change anything. i can still only hear myself through the windows settings, but not in Steam settings.

i use stereo speakers when i'm not gaming. when i'm gaming i use headphones with 7.1 virtual surround sound (unless it's CSGO, then i just use the in-game HRTF with stereo).

EDIT: restarting did nothing either.

On the Recording Tab; devices should offer the following right-click options:
> Set to Default Device
> Set to Default Comms Device

Set the "MIC" to both of those.
Then under Communications tab @ top; select "Do Nothing"

For the Mic default u set as Default, check the Properties for any enhancements.
DB Boost is best off or maybe 10%
Volume should be at 100%
Advanced = set this for Playback and Recording to be the same; either 16bit, 48Khz -or- 24bit, 48Khz
