I do have a German keyboard though, could be an issue not affecting me.
Some Linux do have that as switch for layout settings.
Try to copy/paste the letters from a .txt file to your steam problem game/app/chat.
It seems it is a problem on your side for the chat but the search does just prohibit the entry. So you should only try to fix it for the chat.
At least that is my theory for the moment.
I found the following:
Perhaps it is not a problem you have with steam but a problem with the configuration of your Linux?
Do you start Steam in a way where you can change the language encoding?
Perhaps from a console with settings for LANG or something like that?
- LANG
- LANGUAGE
- LC_ALL
you should consider to make sure these are set to something which works for steam and your keyboard layout.
For tests you could quit steam and start it from a console after setting these above to different settings. UTF8 is always nice and good for me.
sometimes the setting which is used is in /etc/default/locale or something like that,
so don't just check your .profile.
I am using "en_US.UTF-8" which would be no good for you, but so you see the format.
