ÅÄÖ Not working in Steam
Hello, my "ÅÄÖ" is not working in Steam any longer for some reason. It was working just the other week. Anyone know why?

What exactly do you mean, where does it not work? Haven't noticed any issues with äöü on my end.
I do have a German keyboard though, could be an issue not affecting me.

I'm on a Swedish keyboard. The buttons simply don't work in Steam any longer. The keyboard layout is still the same though, I got dash, slash and all my other signs where they usually are on a Swedish keyboard layout.

So it's not a case of accidentally pressing Alt+Shift and switching a different keyboard layout, like the English one?

Nope. Alt+Shift is a Windows thing. I'm on Linux.

Depending on your Linux and your settings, try ctrl-shift. Perhaps you hit that?
Some Linux do have that as switch for layout settings.

Yeah I know, only got one language pack installed though so my hotkey, which is Ctrl+Alt+K does just toggle thru Swedish & Swedish. No go.

Next think I'd test would be if the problem is on your side or on the other side.
Try to copy/paste the letters from a .txt file to your steam problem game/app/chat.

Good thinking. Works in the chat, but not in the library search field.

But directly it works neither in the chat nor in the library search field?
Captain Totte May 8, 2017 @ 5:36am
I can copy to chat, but not the search field.

Mmm, I am not sure what we do know now.
It seems it is a problem on your side for the chat but the search does just prohibit the entry. So you should only try to fix it for the chat.
At least that is my theory for the moment.

I found the following:

This issue is better solved by the next input:

$ ibus-daemon --xim

And, also activating this Keyboard input method system in the System preferences - Language Support:

Keyboard input method system => XIM

The reason is that, when a language has complex characters like "à", the "Ibus" always generates problems, even to the "very known" non Gnome applications like Skype and Microsoft Office-PlayOnLinux. The typical error is that appears "`a" instead of "à".

My recommendation is that you add the "ibus-daemon --xim" as Startup Application in order to forget this issue forever.

Perhaps it is not a problem you have with steam but a problem with the configuration of your Linux?

Do you start Steam in a way where you can change the language encoding?
Perhaps from a console with settings for LANG or something like that?

I just checked, the ones I set are
- LANG
- LANGUAGE
- LC_ALL
you should consider to make sure these are set to something which works for steam and your keyboard layout.

For tests you could quit steam and start it from a console after setting these above to different settings. UTF8 is always nice and good for me.

Sorry for the many posts, I just setup my systems and don't touch the servers for years,
sometimes the setting which is used is in /etc/default/locale or something like that,
so don't just check your .profile.
I am using "en_US.UTF-8" which would be no good for you, but so you see the format.
