Wireless controller (360) connects but only SOME buttons are responsive
I've never used the Steam Forums so I have no idea if this is the right place, but it seems like it could be. Frustrating problem here, so I'm just kind of trying to put my questions in different places.

My wireless Xbox 360 controllers that I've been using for a couple years with a wireless dongle on my Windows PC are...suddenly not working here in the last couple weeks.
They connect, but only SOME of the buttons are responsive.

This is what I know:

Controllers worked fine before the last couple weeks, stopped working I think around the time of Windows' Game Mode auto-update.
Games work fine on keyboard, but I use my wireless 360 controllers frequently for couch gaming.
Controllers connect fine, but only some of the button inputs register. Right joystick and face buttons work; left joystick and D-pad are completely unresponsive. This is consistent across all controllers I've tried.
X360 Controllers and an Xbox One controller I tried have the same problem, so it might be an xInput thing? I don't know enough about that to make an educated guess. I have not tried a wired controller as I don't have any.

Here's what I've tried:

Computer reboot, no change.
Unplug and plug back in the dongle and get it reset, no change.
Update drivers, no change.
As far as system specs go, I'm not sure exactly what could be useful but I'll try to do some listing. Using Windows 10 Home version 1607 OS Build 14393.1966. 64-bit OS.
Xbox 360 Controller for Windows driver: 10.0.14393.0 [7/15/2016] (I believe this is the newest version that exists.)

Is there somebody out there who can help me get back to dying in Dark Souls? (Edit: Um...this seems to have been moved to the Dark Souls 3 forum but it's obviously, clearly not specifically about Dark Souls. That was just one game I referenced.)

Device Manager > Controller > Update Driver > Browse > Change to the oldest one labeled "Microsoft Xbox 360 Controller"

Thank you, BMGaming. As I said in the post, I tried testing to see if it was the driver. That wasn't the problem, though! I figured it out yesterday. Steam was using my Xbox controllers like a Steam Controller in desktop mode, but not switching back to game mode when I turned on a game. I unchecked that in Big Picture's Controller Settings and it solved my problem.
