Fraps does default to top-left in yellow. Blocky and 2-3x the size of steams FPS overlay so your description is similar.
Fraps is usually installed to C:\Fraps or check in control panel/program features to see if you have it installed. Third party app/download or something you haven't noticed.
You could try loading a game which has the new FPS counter, Alt+Tab, Load task manager and see whats running in the background. Hopefully frapsor other FPS counter app will jump out at you.
