Steam Overlay not working for some games.

Okay so yesterday I tried to start playing a game called Beyond Magic. So I load it in big picture mode as I have a steam controller that I like to play my RPG's like this with and though it says full controller support the buttons are not acting right. So I exit the game and check the configuration. Looks right I try to load it again. Still not right. Exit the game again and with some digging I realize the game is not recognizing the controller, it is staying in desktop mode for the game. not Big picture mode which I am launching from but desktop mode. So I tried reinstalling all the controller drivers thinking that was the problem, obviously no luck there. Eventually (like a stupidly long time realizing this) I realize the Steam Overlay is not working. Can't access it from either controller or keyboard launching from big picture or not. Double and triple checked that it is enabled in general settings and game settings still no dice. I even recovered 1 of my computers and only installed chrome, steam, and nvidia to ensure no background programs are interfering. So, I posted a thread in that games forum seeing if anyone else had a problem, and still started digging some more, because I know it (the overlay) was working yesterday and the day before. It still works on almost all of my games. the only ones it doesn't seem to be working on are my RPGmaker games, mostly from Aldorlea games, but I haven't tried all of them either. I have tried 3 of theirs plus Destiney Warriors where it won't work. I have also tried about a dozen other games with and without controller support where everything works fine. So I'm thinking it has to be something in the launching of the RPGmaker games. Has anyone else had this problem or possibly know a workaround to it? I have seriously spent easily 5 or 6 hours trying to cover my bases troubleshooting this so any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Its entirely possible that the overlay just doesn't work with those games. Have you checked the game forum for solutions?

I did on the 1 game that I was actually trying to play no mention of it there, but I will look on others.

Okay so apparently the overlay doesn't work in 90% of rpgmaker games. Trying real hard not to get angry at steam about this as with all of my searching and troubleshooting never once was this mentioned. I would not have wasted the money on a steam controller had I known it would be useless for what I wanted to use it for.

Steam controller will not function properly without the overlay. I'm a little peeved to pay 50$ for something I can't use the way it was intended to be used.

Yeah and I appreciate the help, but honestly didn't think this would be an insurmountable problem or I wouldn't have put this much effort into it in the first place. But that ay be the route I have to go. Still if someone does know a workaround... didn't hurt me to ask.

Already did, but it is not a game specific problem. It is a game style problem limited to at most 20 or so games I own.

Ok, so I've worked out a sort of backhanded workaround to get the controller working properly, since I figure the overlay is a problem no one who can really cares to fix it. Basically you have to modify the desktop configuration of the steam controller in big picture mode, but it isn't quite just that easy because if you go straight in to that it won't let you set the buttons you want as you can't use a regular controller on the desktop. You can load one of the game templates as the desktop configuration but if the buttons are wrong in that you can't adjust them there either due to the same problem. So first I loaded it with that one to find out what buttons needed to be where. Then I loaded the same controller profile into the game specific configuration; the one it won't use because of the lack of the overlay and edited it there to reflect what I wanted. Then you have to export the configuration to your personal configurations. Then you have to go back to the desktop donfiguration and browse configurations and load the one you just exported from the category "your other configurations." Took a little bit but now at least the controller is working which was my initial problem. Steam overlay not working is a mild annoyance but not my main issue. Only reason I am posting this here is if someone else is looking for help with the same thing. If you have any questions about it feel free to comment here or message me.
