I hope Steam does not end up like Internet Explorer or MySpace.

Steam is great, and it's a game client first, and a social site second.

Yes, it's still great now. But complacency can creep up on anyone. It can easily happen when you're on top.

so why isnt the client keeping up with the trend of having a small working hd and large storage drive, or at least an option within the client to set this up? versus having people do this outside of the client?

not that it's a huge deal, but it seems to me would be somewhat simpler.

As long as I got my games, I really don't care what happens.

Oh god in two years Origin being the #1 game client... it would be the end of days.

Steam will always be about games first. Media and ♥♥♥♥ second.

Because it's better to do things gradually and get them right the first time rather than throw everything together at once and struggle for years with a poorly written codebase.

LOL @ my luck. It turns out that Valve has an opening for a "Web Engineer - Front End", which is basically what I do. I just applied, said a few words, and sent them off my resume.
Valve is always hiring for all positions. Also, good luck!

One can disagree with some of the changes but I don't think anyone can accuse Valve of complacency. We've had Steam Greenlight, the Community Upgrade, new in-Steam forums, Linux client coming soon, non-game software coming soon, Steam Big Picture starting today, plus CS: GO released and DOTA 2 beta going strong. I don't see any complacency.

are you saying you wouldnt like to see a steam commercial saying 'a faster steam is more beautiful...'???

I don't think they are being complacent right now. My post was mainly to express that I hope it doesn't happen in the future.

Not quite an equal comparison in the title. I see steam more as a games version of itunes rather than a games version of a web browser or media site

Valve keeps steam outside the cave. They are carefuly and properly evolving the platform. They take their time, but they are not leaving it behind its time.

I think the new Community features are a step in the right direction. Especially Greenlight. Greenlight is one of the most forward thinking ideas I've seen in the traditional core video games market in a long time.

Yea, valve moves slow...too slow sometimes. It took them forever just to put in a simple wishlist function. That is something that should have been implemented from the beginning and not several years later. The two things I can think of that needs to be done is, one, like the person mentioned above, they need to let you select a drive to store your games on, and two, on the steam client they need tabbed browsing. I cannot believe we are stuck on one page and forced to go back and forth to view stuff on the client in this day and age. It is like being back in the early 90's again.
