do sales repeat usually?
Hey all, New steam user. just wondering if steam sales usually repeat?

I hesitated on buying Dark Souls (on my wishlist) mainly because I been buying a lot of sales and humble bundles, also got batman origins from buying my Graphics Card, I can't really keep up with playing all of them right now. And the same time thought to myself am I really going to buy EVERYTHING on sale. It's kind of addictive. But now I though I should of just bought it and when I had time I'd get around to it.

So I seen that it been on sale during sumer sale as well, does it seem likely it be on sale again? the other game I was looking at was castle storm. I swear when I seen them both on sale I started thinking "is this for real? does steam just show me targeted sales of stuff in my wishlist so I never stop spending" which my main reason for holding back lol. might sound dumb i know.

Yes.
A good way of seeing how often something goes on sale is to check the news section of a game's community hub.

Also, keep an eye on greenmangaming.com, they sometimes have it on sale too, activates on Steam. One other thing, it's coming up to Halloween soon, and there's usually a horror themed sale. Not sure if Dark Souls would fit the theme, as it's not a horror game, as such, but it'd be worth keeping an eye on.

thanks for the feedback, I think the games I have will last me till christmas! so I'll try to wait it out and keep and eye on the halloween and christmas sale (halloween my bday so maybe it will treat me right with dark souls or left 4 deads lol)

Going to check out that site! thanks for pointing it out to me. damn pc sales are getting addictive!

There is no fixed rules of whether or when or how a sale will return, but there's a very good chance that there will be a sale again at some point. Maybe from Steam, maybe on another site. Who knows, maybe it shows up in the next humble bundle, or another bundle (although I'm really only interested in bundles providing Steam keys).

I'm basically doing the same thing: I usually look at the games that Steam has a on a sale, but instead of actually buying one that I consider to be interesting I often stick it onto my wishlist (so quite a few "added on" dates correspond to a daily deal of that game...).

For sales prices and stuff, "enhanced steam" is also useful. This is a browser plugin that adds additional information into the Steam store webpages; among the things added is a link to a price history database :-) But even that doesn't guarantee anything -- you might see a lot of price drops from frequent deals in the past, but the next sale could be years away since the publisher has finally fired that sales director and hired one who wants to pull in more money. Or the game might not have had a sale in years, and suddenly the publisher decides that it's time to boost sales by giving it a -90% discount for a few days.

Also, mostly based on gut-feeling, the sales discount seems to "stick" in a manner of speaking. It might be lower if the sale is longer (like on a week long deal compared to a daily deal), but if the game has a -80% discount on a daily deal, chances are that the next daily deal will be -80% again.

This has lead to the wishlisting of games that are on sale: if I don't think I'll be playing the game "anytime soon" I'll just wishlist it (or ignore it; I don't need a wishlist entry for every game I'm interested in, just the less known ones), under the assumption that future deals might be even cheaper, but are unlikely to be more expensive. After all, every once in a while the base price is reduced as well, so even if the sales discount remains the same the deal might be better than before.

EDIT: if you're checking out 3rd party sites, be aware that some games also have versions that are NOT on steam. So if you're specifically looking for Steam-games, double check that you're getting a Steam key.

If you are afraid of missing it when it goes on sale again you can get Steam to send you an email whenever something on your wishlist goes on sale. Click on your Account name at the top right of the page and select 'Account Details' then at the bottom right there is a link for 'configure your email preferances.

Most games on Steam get several sales throughout the year, not only during the summer and winter sales but in midweek, weekend and daily deal promotions.

a lot of good info here. going to check that browser plugin too, sounds like something I would like.

in your experience (just curious), did you often catch the next sale for a game you wishlisted at a better time for you? as in you had more time to play it now or had more cash to spend.
