Why steam update "extracting package" is long time update.I can not open my steam please reply me !! :(

i got this problem too but i fixed somehow...i just cancelled it about 6 times and restarted my computer then started steam again and it gave me the same extracting packages but i waited for about a minute and steam was up and running...idk if this'll work for you but yeah i hope it gets fixed

This worked for me:

Exit steam.
Go to your steam folder and delete the folder "package".
All I can say that was lost at the moment where me favourite servers. All games, saves etc are still here. Do this at your own risk and BACKUP you "package" folder.

After I did this, steam downloaded an update, installed it and I was ready to go and the loop was gone. this was posted by 2007 Britney, thank her, dont thank me, it will redownload the update and maybe it will work! : )

Just delete the file: 'Package" in the steam downloader (when Steam is closed) and then restart Steam. It will reinstall an update, and Voila!

I got the same problem, yesterday steam was loading for like 2 hours and nothing, i tried it later and it was the same, even if i restart PC and steam many times. Today i reinstall the steam but still its extracting package and nothing is happening, no login window or anything just this i tried delete package but nothing worked i dont know what to do :/, i am so tired of this

this issue for me was solved by switching to safe mode WITH networking. Then I could get packages extracted and now it works finaly!

I bought a new laptop today and put in my old email from my old laptop into the new one, and went to my previous settings from my old laptop. I bought it because my old laptop wouldn't play my games so I reinstalled steam on this new laptop. It's "Updating Steam..." and shows (blank of 82,653 KB) the download shoots up to 40,000 then sometimes jumps back down to 1 KB. Its taking very slow and I never had to wait for steam to update so long. This laptop has 4GB system memory and 500GB of storage. HP. It's really irritating me I just want to know if it's normal to take so long because i paid $300 for this new laptop just so I could play on steam.
