Internet down, can't play single player games

My internet was out for a few days, as was much of QLD due to the floods. I was surprised when I couldn't play my single player games because Steam needed to go online to 'convert the game content.' and couldn't detect an internet connection to do so. I found it very frustrating that there was no way to play my single player games without this conversion.

I hope that Steam would consider allowing people with no internet connection to opt out of such updates, or if there was a way to opt out, instruct users on how that could be done.

Go through your entire game list and convert everything that needs to be converted.

The ones that don't, check every week. They are all eventually going to be in the new format.

I will now, the point of my post was that I was unable to connect to the internet for more than 2 days. I would have liked to have played my single player games at that time but couldn't. Steam is a great service, but I found this required update frustrating when my internet connection, along with half of Queensland's, was washed away.

It's frustrating, but it'll happen once per game and then never happen again, and the new system that the conversion is to actually does let you just ignore updates in offline mode. (I think. I just tried to simulate that by changing languages and betas, but it didn't work, so they might have changed that behaviour. Oh well.)

Actually, it can happen again, but not as often as regular updates. It all depend on the devellopers' ways of patching their games. Some does compatible patch with the new converted files while others prefer to do it with the old version so, if you don't at least run the game once even after a regular patch, you might be asked to connect to convert the new added files.

Valve really needs to fix this. They should notify us when a game needs to change to the new content system. Instead, they switch it to "Do not automatically update" setting and we never find this out until we decide to run the game again.
