I have a question
Today I installed Ubuntu 12.10 and I worked on it a bit long
But now I see that Steam isn't availaible for this version
Does anyone know when this could be availaible for Ubuntu 12.10 ?

Doesn't linux have any kind of backwards compatibility of any sort?

um I am running Steam on both 12.04 and 12.10.
Just run the deb and let it do its thing.
Currently for the beta - it is being tested with 12.04, but it works with other versions and other distributions.

Installed and got it working on Linux mint 14 last night. Worked great in fact. Should work fine for Ubuntu 12.10.

Steam for linux is still in beta. but their upcoming console in 2013 will be linux based (hence big picture mode, and the sudden linux port of steam)
I hope, i pray, i'd beg, i'd pay for the game industry to largely move over to openGL instead of directx so games can easily be ported between linux and windows (and even mac even if i don't care about that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥) if linux becomes a bigger platform with more games on it companies that make drivers will be harshly encouraged, some maybe even forced to (if they wish to battle their rivals) to make proper drivers for linux, which would be an excellent thing cus then i could say bye to stupid windows...

Seriously tho, i recommend you try other distributions than ubuntu, (at least try) if you haven't, ubuntu is great for some, but for others not as much, i prefer gentoo, but thats pretty hardcore, i hear excellent things about archlinux, then theres also CentOS which i see seems to be the most used by server hosters, Fedora is largely recommended by many, its about as mainstream as ubuntu, but some prefer it over ubuntu and vice versa, also try the different user interfaces (x windows systems) like KDE, LXDE and XFDE (latter 2 being the lightweight interfaces, KDE being the heavyweight windows-like interface) Ubuntu at least as standard uses UNITY which is based on the GNOME interface, which is (i think) based on the apple's OSx interface ("simplicity" but it was never really simple to me i just wanted to ragequit cus of the lack of buttons to press)

It's working for me right now on 12.10 64-bit. I'm using Xubuntu, but it should be similar for other package combinations for Ubuntu. I didn't have to do anything special to install, it asked for several i386 compatibility libraries before installing from the .deb, install those and it should "just work". If you're having problems, I'd try moving ~/.steam and ~/.local/share/Steam somewhere else so you don't have the problems of old configuration files hanging around, and it should just update from the servers normally.

not working on xubuntu 12.10 (dual monitor, 64bit gtx550 ti i3 550)

it installs fine the interface works great except big picturemode

non of the games i bought work, none of them starts up

trine2 gives me the launcher without my native resolution in the dropdown

Serious Sam3, my screen turns black and then crashes to desktop and messes up the resolution of the desktop; i have to reboot to fix it

harvest, says i need extra dependencies (which i already have, i checked) so i t opens a console gives me errormessages and the starts downloading dependencies (which i already have) over and over again

something wrong with my system perhaps? i dunno, other games work out of the box (champions of regnum, bastion....)

hope this gets resolved soon, and hope to see some more steam action on the xubuntu site (not much support there)

@sevensevenseven
Why aren't you running 12.04 LTS? Bleeding edge (x)Ubuntu rarely works out for noobs for very long due to package conflicts. If you can't work around these or dependency issues on your own, you aren't going to be having very much fun with beta project of any kind. It's actually best if you just install Windows at this point and not look back.

Is there something about your system that requires you to run 12.10?

For Linux questions, you're probably better off posting in the Steam for Linux discussions area: http://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/ as you're more likely to catch the right people's eyes.

I doubt any of them are really looking for answer. None of the posts have any sort of information to work with. It could quite literally say 'herp derp Steam don't work' and it would be about as useful. I would just let them get bored and go back to their Windows installs. The last thing we'd want is every single time the client is updated a bunch of noobs complaining about how the client doesn't work in distribution level x when it was intended for y. Sure, we could drag them through fixing things, but what's that gain? Nothing productive, only more silly questions.

Now are all the games that are available on Steam for Windows available for Ubuntu?

Ubuntu 12.10 64Bit here & Steam is working, right now I have 105 games in my list, of those 33 are listed as Linux enabled but not all of them install.

@Anon-E-Mouse and others clicking on icons and not seeing any progress:
Please open a terminal, and type:
steam <press enter>

It should show a bunch of output in the terminal. Paste that terminal output into this forum and although I'm not a debian or *buntu man, I'll see if I can at least identify something that could be an issue.

Also a general note - when asking for help you should also post a lot more information then you originally did, otherwise people won't be able to help you identify the issue. Please include things like how you installed steam, your system specs, what video card you have, what video drivers you are using etc. Include as much information as possible - too much info is better then too little.

For me it steam say it's still in closed beta login with enrolled account to continue and then it just closes. I've changed my settings and I should be in beta.
