installing from DVD Empire total war
Why is this so difficult. I ran the install from DVD took nearly 40 minutes, then steam tries to download the entire game again!!! Surely it has to be easier than that!!!

Is there anyway that the Total War dvd can be installed without the massive download of 16GB. I an not willing to try this method of installation. I would like some help to install it for my child from the purchased version without being attached to an online network.

There is no way to install without downloading - unfortunately while you can install from DVD as you've tried, there have been massive patches to Empire Total War since it was released and so the download is likely to just be the updates to the files. You won't be able to play until the download is completed. It is a bit of a pain but you will end up with the fully patched version which fixed a lot of the bugs in the original version

I'm not sure this has anything to do with steam being DRM? And it works fine as an unobstrusive DRM anyway. Their problem is simply the download - maybe they have internet caps or something

The problem being missed entirely is that the game has had about 8-10gb of updates since release so the dvd edition will still require a large update regardless... best to just suck it down off steam in one go as the dvd edition is not the latest build.

So? It's a singleplayer game. Another DRM fail.
Um no it has extensive multiplayer as well.

If you cant even install a game from a DVD, then it's DRM failure. Don't be such a fan boy.

But it is installing from the DVD. However the DVD does not contain the patched version so the patches need to be downloaded. No fanboyism at all! Just explaining why there is a download

The original Empire Total War was extremely buggy - trust me, you want the patched version

Exactly my point. The source of install matters not. The game had tonnes of fixes even for single player in the updates, like it or not, you will have to get them to play it as it's a steamworks game. In addition to this game it's also quite old now so it's not like the newer titles have done it any differently...Shogun 2 series has had massive amounts of updates as well... all for the best. It's all part and parcel of the service... Steam updates your games for you on fresh installs to the latest build automatically so live with it.

well i say ♥♥♥♥ that. to download the 9.8GB "patch" its going to cost me around $100 dollars for my slow arss prepaid internet. i paid for a hard copy empire total war gold edition and despite installing it and "owning" it i cant play it offline until i pay to have it patched. Steam can go talk to my internet provider and sort that ♥♥♥♥ out for me, somehow refund my money i spent on the game and compensate me for the mental stress and hours i spent trying to make it work and find solutions. i paid hard earned money and demand satisfaction
