If you don't know how to do this, this Support article should help: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5623-QOSV-5250

It is a option but valve has to give us a full support for the most common resolutions.

-fulldesktopres Works for 4k(2160p).

Simply go to your steam directory, (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe) for most.
Create a shortcut of Steam.exe. Right click the shortcut and select "properties".
Under the "shortcut" tab add "-fulldesktopres" to the end of the "Target:" field. ("C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe" -fulldesktopres) for most. Then click "OK".

Now whenever you start steam from this shortcut it will use your desktop resolution even in big picture mode.

This doesn't seem to be working for me. Does this only work for 4k? Not 2560x1440?

The trick works in all resolutions including 1440p. Just make sure that you first exit steam before using the shortcut. [top left corner -> Steam -> Exit

LOL, I just forced it to 4k and my computer restarted. but if you let it without the fulldesktopres launch option it will work on 1080p upscaled to 1440p then STRETCHED to 4k, not that bad tho.
