The likes of Black and White are nowhere to be seen here, I'm afraid, nor are Master of Olympus/ Master of Atlantis (even though the latter are predisposed a bit more towards city building rather than straight and upfront god games). Gods, those and the days of Populous were the days...

Some options worth checking out have already been mentioned here. I'm on the lookout for Reus myself, and as several people have mentioned, it does look promising. Just make sure you check out the discussion area and look for screenshots and gameplay videos (youtube) before you decide on anything. I'm still on the fence about that particular game myself. I like the concept, but reading about some of the gameplay mechanics has me slightly worried.

Also War for the Overworld may be something to keep an eye on, akin to dungeon keeper. It's early access on steam.
