They will even allow you to install whatever OS you want on it, and since Steam runs on pretty much any OS out there it will work.
They also allow people who want to upgrade the steambox with better hardware to do so.
So it'll be like having a PC that you can upgrade/have your OS of choice, but is much more convenient for hooking up to your TV to take advantage of big picture and console style gaming.
It also will probably be a lot smaller than most other consoles so you can easily carry it with you to a friends house and have all your steam games ready to go.
Pretty sure I saw somewhere Gabe saying that it wouldn't compete with a top end PC and if you like that sort of thing it might not be for you.
But if you want a computer to play steam games on your TV and that's it, grab this in a nice convenient package
I am almost certain you can do that. The only problem is that you have to keep in mind that just like other consoles, you can't simply plop in a windows game and expect it to run.
The steambox is going to be running a Linux based OS (probably a custom Ubuntu without any window manager which will just boot right into big picture mode).
So since Guild Wars 2 is a windows game it won't run on the steambox (initially) unless it's possible to get WINE on it. But take it from me, GW2 runs terribly in wine, so you don't want this anyway.
However, as I mentioned before one thing that will set the steambox apart from other consoles is that valve already said that they are perfectly ok with people installing any OS they like on it (it won't void your warranty or anything, you can even change hardware), so feel free to install windows on it and then windows games like GW2 should run fine.
I will be supporting the steambox because unlike other consoles valve is going to make it friendly to tinker with. It will truly be your toy to do whatever you want with, and that's something I think we need to see more of, instead of things becoming even more and more locked down *cough*xbox one*cough*
First of all, this is worlwide marketing, so many millions of dollars invested, shareholders and for the company is not light and easy gameplay.
Don't forget, Mr. Newell is a smart businessmann, we don't know his strategy and very careful to bring this thing in marketplace, accepted by the cosumer's with open-arm.
Wither Top or Flop. The best win...floodings dollars notes.

And then the match can begin and we hope Ubuntu will be a legendary in the Gaming Industry.
If Valve release a console at all, it would be locked down to its own software. Otherwise, they would have to charge a lot of money for it.
Consoles are only so cheap because they sell them at a loss and make the money back from selling software.
I don't see how they could possibly lock it down to their own software and also allow users to install any OS on it they want, which they already said they would.
(of course there is a chance they could go back on their word but so far this is what they have said).
This would overwrite any lockdowns they have. But I doubt they would put any intentional lockdowns anyway since they already seem to want to keep it very open to letting the user do whatever they want with it.
You make a good point. Never thought about it that way.
