Will steam finally allow email account username change?
I read it here. http://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/wcl4j/steam_to_allow_username_changes_in_the_future/

So anyway.. how many of you have account names that are email addresses? I know you can change your username to make it appear otherwise but your login account name will still be that email address which you can't change if you created an account back when steam was first released.

The account name is a pretty integral key used in the Steam infrastructure. There's been talk of changing it but the 'hooks' are apparently everywhere. And really that's a lot of effort for almost zero impact to most users. As they say if it ain't broke don't fixit.

But those old e-mail address account names are horrible! Back then people only used either hotmail or yahoo for e-mail and you can imagine how badly named they are.

The point is that the change requires a lot of work, with not a heck of a lot of payoff for most people. It's 'annoying' but hardly terrible. I'e been using my hotmail account now for like, god almost 20 years now. I still have free POP redirection because I got grandfathered into it.

Oh God, leddit.

I wouldn't mind changing my steam account's username, as it's rather a silly one.

This is quite troublesome for me, as years of purchases are on this account and I am unable to change my username. My go-to username at the time was taken, and I had to alter it slightly, but I have now adopted an entirely new username. This remains my only account for which the login details don't match the rest of my accounts. I'd much appreciate it if Steam would reference SteamIDs instead of usernames and the ability to change usernames was added in.

Same issue for me, this is really kind of juvenile. Valve needs to make the investment to go through and update their code.

I don't really understand what the issue is. The owner of the account is the only person that should ever know the name of the account. It's just a log in... the name that is displayed to the public can be changed any time.

Vampire, and what if your login is a 15 year old e-mail address at a defunct ISP? And you are stuck with it forever? It took me an eternity to figure out what it could be once, then I've re-forgotten a few times since then. It's still pretty janky.
