Called it - New California Law about game ownership does nothing
Was useless as I predicted, just a box that says read the SSA

There will always be someone that wont read caution or warning signs to the point some entity comes and says "you need even more signs". But someone will still stick their hand in running machinery with signs that say not to.

That being said, I wonder how many will even read that just like how the Early Access big blue box gets ignored, a lot of people are just "yeah sure whatever agree take me to checkout".

Ah so they did eventually make the mistake of rolling this out internationally.
Which means putting in the spotlight that this is a digital service contract and not a contract for the supply of digital content.

This means another EU fine will probably be heading Valve's way for misleading consumers for a decade and counting, as the EU doesn't allow traders to request consumers waive their right of withdrawal - as Valve has actually been doing - for digital services. Requesting waiving of that right is only allowed for contracts for supply of digital content.

Humorously, they actually also made a boo-boo in at least the Dutch translation of said box. If I were to translate that back into English it states that: "With any purchase of a product, you are granted a license for this product on Steam." I.e. it actually acknowledges that you are buying the game as a product, which just so happens to have a license included on Steam on the side.

You mean stating the same it always had?

Stating that fines will happen because it's displayed more forward implies that no one has ever sent the EULA to be analyzed or that the courts are so incompetent, they couldn't enforce their own laws from a decade ago.

Well, of course it does nothing! Just Gavin Newsom's way of saying: "You will own nothing and be happy." There is (and should be) any legal difference between a digital license and physical disk! This is Radicalifornia Democrats/Uniparty telling storefronts to lie about our private property.

Except that disc versions also are simply licenses. Any "difference" is made up by people.

That is some nice word salad.

Edit: Let the tantrum commence XD

Judging by the reaction to the latest changes to the SSA, we still need a lot more boxes. Or maybe Gaben needs to go to your house personally and read it to you.

Consumers mislead themselves.
The consumers assumed they had ownership when they NEVER did.
The consumers would fail to read the legally binding contract known as the EULA and would assume they had ownership, when all they had is a license.
All Steam is doing is telling users what they have already been buying.

That was my thought as well when skimming it. The law seemed so toothless that nothing would really change. More than, change word X to word Y instead, that is.

My opinion is that the USA is way too focused on companies and not the people. Like how it seems people use the word Consumer instead of Customer. Consumer sounds so, I don't know, inhuman? But that's a topic for another time.

I should have said moral instead of legal. But, you get the idea.

Was it a word salad because I said things like Uniparty?

Oh it is focused on people. The people who are too daft to read and understand the terms they agree to. You can't force a seller to sell what they don't want to sell. Just like you can't forxce someone to buy something they don't want to buy/"
