when did Steam become moderated by reddit staff?
Only reddit has more ban-happy and power tripping mods than Steam Community, which thankfully still can't apply any permanent bans except for scammers and real criminals.

I remember well that bans were given only to serious harassers, spammers and toxic Aholes that threw profanity and insults in every post.
Nowadays even the slighted hint of disrespect is enough for a ban,

called someone a clown - 2 week ban
said that i hate russia because of their war crimes - 4 week ban
called someone a liar - 3 week ban
made a political topic in Off Topic - 1 week ban
called someone a terrorist scum because they were justifying murder - 2 month ban.

what the hell happened? how is this allowed??
i thought only people aged 16+ are allowed to use steam, so why is our speech policed like we're in a kindergarten???
not even facebook and twitter were this bad!

We did and here's the thing. Users don't get to decide what is and isn't a bannable offense. If you don't think those were insults, well.....

seems like users do, because no one would be punished for these "insults" if no one was reporting them.
and seems there are a lot of children/manchilcdren who report these "insults frequently enough to become bannable, because there was a time when bans were handed only to actual serious offenses like racist slurs, continious harassment, constant swearing and spreading hatred
Nope the moderators decided it was against the rules....not the users that reported it.

Go shoot your mouth off in a bar with those same insults and see what happens. A lot more than a ban.

So, yeah.

Also funny that you and your friends are trying to high-five each other when those high-fives don't change anything.
TLDR: namecalling is against the rules. People who get punished for it, don't want it to be.

Rules don't really care what they want however.

i can say these words directly to people's faces and the worst consequence i'll suffer is getting insulted in return.
sorry to burst your bubble, but actual adults in the real world can handle a little bit of smack talk. only toddlers are sensetive enough to demand someone to be punished for it
right? it's actually just censorship when they can freely ban you for saying things they don't like and don't even have to give a reason >.>

No, that is factually incorrect. Seeing that I was one of the Volunteer moderators back in time I can safely say we banned for light insults.

That is, calling someone an idiot was enough to get them banned. As it is an insult and was against the rules.

If anything, the bar would congratulate me for being the man. Your argument doesn't hold water in that case.

The one causing trouble would have been kicked out of the bar by bouncers.

oh hey Zefar, i remember you, you indeed were a great mod in ye olden times so i belive you.
and although you're right i don't remember you or your peers punishing people for calling others 'clown' or 'liar' which aren't direct insults like 'idiot'

I can say, the global mods did warn/ban users for doing so, yes.

:nkCool:

Liar slipped under the radar depending how loaded the sentence containing it was, but flat out calling people clowns also got folks banned back then.

As another volunteer mod oft says in context to arguments on the forum, play the argument not the man, it's less likely to get moderated.

for a couple weeks back at the peak of the wokeness steam was trying to issue bans for people saying the word "stupid" lol...

guess they realised just how prevalent that term is in the common vernacular...

I mean calling someone stupid is an insult so....kinda correlates with calling someone an idiot. Would likely have gotten a warning, or a ban depending if it was repeated behavior. Even in vmod days.

it wasn't just calling someone stupid though... it was like saying "this is stupid" would get you warned/banned lol

Well, was it constructive or no? If not, kinda have your answer right there.
Everything in moderation. Even moderation itself.

Valve understandably has a hands-off approach for the most part but it relies heavily on reports. Reports that sometimes just come from small-minded clowns (yeah, I said it) who decide which topics belong in which category. I had one such recently get my thread (about games) moved to the slime pit that is off-topic and also taunt me with a comment on my profile about having reported me. But Valve are happy, as their report was dealt with and no cost to them other than a few clicks.

Being "stupid" isn't an insult. It more like skill issue. Getting banned for saying "stupid" is ridiculous.
