EDIT:
Yeah, Big Picture mode just puts Steam into a console mode (game controller).
Maybe you use a controller for PC Gaming and maybe it triggers Big Picture mode? Just a guess as I don't use controllers.
No I don't use controllers ever but after 30+ years of gaming I have vowed to learn.. like many other things I have vowed to learn

Spent several hours to find an override to steam that forces it use bigger font. But alas, in vain.
Running on manjaro/proton 9.0-4 - everything works otherwise pretty well.
