"The voices of the players" resulting in even worse results, as virtually every "viewers choice"/internet popularity content shows.
The Game Awards have always been a joke, but not because of the nominations. Mostly because it's just a big advertising show. No idea how the Spike Game Awards ended up having people think they're big & important.
"<Game> didn't get nominated for GotY! These awards are a joke!" No, the joke is that they somehow convinced you that their GotY award means anything.
If Valve can trademark "Steam" and "Valve", I don't see why Geoff can't trademark "The Game Awards".
Geoff may have popularised this in recent years but with the amount of money he's potentially harvesting without any exclusivity, any attempt to secure the pot for himself may get challenged, not in concept terms but in the broader sense of the name.
He may have journalists wrapped and more deals in place than the Superbowl but there's no reason another company with a far greater focus on games couldn't come along and do a far better job.
Superbowl is a pretty good comparison, except instead of people throwing a ball around in between the ads it's just someone reading off the names of video games.
This, really.
Hope there's a really fat paycheck in it, otherwise, CUT THAT ♥♥♥♥ OUT.
I wouldn't assume so, I suspect its more of a 'Hey, look at all these games that were nominated. I bet you want to buy some of these games' deal.
There's so many sales and events now they're crowding each other out, apparently I missed a turn based RPG event because top billing went to an event about cooking games.
As do most of us I'd wager. Would also wager the crying dies off right around the time game devs ease off the gas on so called "woke" agendas and just spend their precious time making games a fun escape from the drama in the real world. It's tiresome hearing the same tug of war convo in daily life, it can move outta my gaming life and won't be missed.
It never mattered, even before Steam, game awards were never handed out based on how the players felt about video games.
