Steam threaten by the CIA
https://x.com/MikeBenzCyber/status/1857704574687027487
The Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, which oversees the CIA, is using an ADL report to openly threaten Steam (the world’s language gaming platform) that it has to censor language, keywords, and accounts, reminding Steam that is “financially successful” for now.

Don't need to try and convince anyone of anything. It's a pretty simple concept.

Sometimes people think they are holding fifty cents and refuse to look down and see it's a nickel.

This is the nickel..

(9) ONLINE PLATFORM.—The term “online platform” means any public-facing website, online service, online application, or mobile application that predominantly provides a community forum for user generated content, such as sharing videos, images, games, audio files, or other content, including a social media service, social network, or virtual reality environment.

That is Steam. Lets move on.

Yup, and the WEBSITE Steamcommunity.com is predominantly a community forum for user generated content, its used for sharing images too, and even our profiles where no user generated content can be shared are on the steamcommunity.com website.

Yep, well we'll see if this passes. It made it thru the Senate pretty easy. The House may punt it, but may guess is, with these new folks the criteria may be even more punitive, particularly with this "woke' craze going on.

Since that is part of the Steam store, it still gets overshadowed by the actual storefront as the predominant feature.

They used to be separate, but then got merged into one. So Steam is still not included as an online platform.
Again, Valve is already compliant, so not sure what the issue could be. They've been compliant before this has ever been a thing.

Nope, because it says "website" in the definition. Steamcommunity.com is the website. It having a link to a store doesn't mean anything for this. Steampowered.com is the store that is predominantly for buying games, where as Steamcommunity.com is a website that is predominantly used for social media purposes. Can I buy games at Steamcommunity.com? no. What can I do at Steamcommunity.com?

Now look at the actual Business, what do they do? Sell digital video games, via an online store for digital distribution, which is their primary business model.
Now what's Valves actual site say? In big, giant, bold letters it says "At Valve we make games, Steam, and hardware. "

None of that displays any form of social media is their primary business model. This has been discussed over and over, at this point I am not within the logical belief that anyone arguing it's social media is doing so from any point of good faith, likely intentionally so in order to try getting government to act upon them as if they were social media.

The Steam community is part of the storefront.

The storefront is still the predominant service of Steam.

"The requirements apply to covered platforms, which are applications or services (e.g., social networks) that connect to the internet and are likely to be used by minors."

Nobody is asking how anyone makes their money. Like Xbox makes their money mainly by selling games and consoles, their main 'purpose' is for those to play games and communicate on their online network, which is what Steam is as well. In lieu of all these services they provide.

Unless one can say, we buy games on Steam, but not play it on Steam. But the two interact.

As well as your profile, messaging and the like.

In fact, Steam accordingst to what was presented, would even be more liable than Xbox or others, given how much more they provide for their users.
If you're going to quote the article, it would help to read it.

It would also help to read the comment you're quoting since I said nothing about income of Steam.

It was not.

Scientist also made no comment about the income of Steam.

Dude, using your wrong logic here, someone just needs to buy Twitter while having a much bigger business, with the stated goal of their business of selling stuff, and then all of a sudden Twitter wouldn't be definded as a social media platform/website and wouldn't have to adhere to any of the laws governing social media platforms.

To put it short, you are not correct at all, not even a little bit.

Steamcommunity.com is the website, it is absolutely irrelevant what the parent company does as their main business, it doesn't change the fact that the website Steamcommunity.com is a social media platform as defined by the law.

Steam isn't a parent company to the forums, it's the same company.

Actually, forums aren't social media under law. In fact, it's missing quite a few things that make it considered social media. Hence why every piece of legislation that targets social media makes not mention of forums like the Steam community.

Right, in another words, i'm posting on this site, separated from the Steam Client. For me to buy or play a game, i have to sign onto the client, to get access to my games, or to buy games.

And so this apparently separate from that.

The forums are in the desktop client. They are part of the same client with a single sign-in.

Very rarely do pieces of legislation mention companies by name. They just describe what they are, as the piece of legislation explained exactly what a gaming outlet or company or online outlet, and gives strict exceptions, where this company is not exempt (schools, broadband companies etc).
