Valve is a privately owned company. They use Chromium (CEF) because it does what they need it to do, and it's open source. Most other game platforms use it for the same reason.

If Google doesn't own Chromium(the reason Valve is dropping Win7 support) then Valve isn't being gatekept by Google.

I mean, it's not hard to see how utilising 3rd party elements can be a boon... it means you don't have to develop that element yourself anymore...

it unfortunately puts you at the mercy of whomever is developing that element, regardless of if it's open source.

I remember a steam where gaben worked to preserve peoples access to their games... not a steam that restricts access. this is an afront to everything that steam used to promote.

They allowed access long after Win7 stopped officially receiving support. They are literally only dropping support after being forced to.

It's developed and maintained by Google. You're being obtuse.

Security updates no longer being compatible. As all software does, eventually the new is no longer compatible with the old Even Firefox is dropping Win7 support.

Being the company that develops and maintains it has as much to do with it gatekeeping what users of the platform do with it as owning it would. Again, you are being obtuse.

More like if want to make improvements, and use "newer" version of Chromium to get newer features, gonna have to update which is the whole drama being spin around, but again Steam choosing to do this, so if new version happen to not work on old OS not much can do about it, if it not worth their time supporting it really. Not everything gum drops, and rainbow when comes to live services.
