SteamOS is ancient. The new version is only available for the Deck.

Pick a Linux distro, Id suggest Pop_Os, and then use Proton.

But yes, you can dual boot.

Pop!_Os is a Linux disto.

There are many. Pop is one of the more "gaming" focused distros. You can use the one of your choice.

Proton is the compatibility layer than Valve has been developing to let windows games play on linux.

On separate partitions or hard drives.

If you want to do that..... get sure before trying it out to research if everything you need on your Laptop will work on Linux too....sometimes stuff can get... complicated.

most distributions will work from a thumb drive, so it would be easy to check

get rufus and a usb drive

download a couple of distros and use rufus to make a bootable drive to see how they run on your computer

pop os is doing well with steam, for me

I suggest trying a Live USB/CD first. It'll basically let you boot Linux without needing to install it.

It's a useful way to get an initial "feel" for Linux, while also doing a basic check on your hardware compatibility (for example, you'll see instantly if Wi-Fi works)

Finally, one other thing I always suggest new users to read is this:
https://linux-gaming.kwindu.eu/index.php?title=Getting_started_with_Linux

It'll give you a good idea of what to expect.

Oh, I really meant check if everything of your Hardware and maybe additional Software is working, not use a yt Video of someone who has no idea about your Setup.

It might be better with Hardware detection then 10-15 years ago, but Laptops might have some properitary stuff in it which still could be Problematic.

And if you install Linux..... be sure to have a Windows install Medium ready... just in case..

Using a live System to Check the Performance would be.... Bad... depending on the System.

I had a few months back used... gparted was it i think, and it ran slow from the usb Stick.
