What consequences does a steam discussion ban have?

Hello good folks of steam.

Today i woke up to a shock. To see i have a ban from the total war forums. By valve staff. It is just a 1 day ban. But still. This is the first time i ever received a ban of any kind on steam. So I'm a little scared what this means. I am very sorry if i did something wrong. Wasn't my intention.

I have been banned for being argumentative and off topic. It was a discussion about the removal of a certain language from a game(you can guess which one). And people from said country with the language. Was justifying a certain war in the comments. And i got angry about that. Since I lost family in that war.

For more context. I'm Dutch. Have a polish mother. and my mother has a sister that lives in that country that was invaded in eastern Europe. I had to nephews. They lived in Mariupol. One of them was 12 the other 19. They both died in bombings.

And then some person from the invading country. Came to the steam forums of the total war Warhammer 3 game. To be angry about the language removal. the discussion devolved.(by other people that weren't banned i may add). I became angry at this persons arguments. and justifying the atrocities. And he came to justify that invasion by saying another superpower(under Canada) Did the same. and posted a list of wars and conflicts that country had participated in. I then reacted with much anger. that I don't support that country. But it is very childish to say. He did so so we are allowed to do so too.

Without using cursewords. I said some angry stuff to him. That are technically against the steam rules. I'm very sorry about that. I also veered off-topic and became argumentative. I shouldn't have done that. It does feel however unfair to be banned for that even for one day. While even worse offenders. In that same topic. Came away scott free. So this is my perspective of the situation. Again I'm very sorry i participated in this.





This all being said. I appealed the ban. Since it is just a 1 day discussion ban. I don't expect moderators to look at it. Or overturn it. Still I tried. With the same context as I've written here. and with my apologies.

I just want to know. What consequences does this ban have? Apart from the day not being able to post in that forum? Do you get a record on steam? And if you get banned again you get community wide ban? or a steam wide ban? I sometimes argue on steam with other people. I have a tendency to do that. In all my years on steam. This is my first ever ban of any kind. Im just afraid that this would have more consequenses.

Bans escalate based on how many you have and although it may feel unfair you were correct when you stated "I shouldn't have done that."

You are never told whether those others you deem were worse were actually warned or not you only see if they are banned. Secondly when you are banned it may seem unfair but you need to step back and see what you did wrong and try not to repeat it. You were actually able to do that and deserve praise for it.

The OP is talking about a game hub ban, not a community ban. That does not turn your profile private. Only community bans do that. And there is no publicly visible "banned" tag on your account with game hub or forum bans, unless you're talking about some internal reference or something like that.

I never got a 24 hour ban on a game hub because of the mods perma banning.

What...? The op never said anything about a perma-ban. They said they got a 1 day ban on a game hub. That's not anything to do with community bans or perma bans, I'm not sure what you're trying to say. Now, if you DO get multiple game hub bans in a short period, you will automatically trigger a community ban, but the OP said they have never been banned before, at all, on Steam.

Don't worry about a 1-day ban, it doesn't mean much. The worst thing about it, other than damaged pride, is that any bans/warnings are attached to your account and can be seen by forum mods and Valve staff, which could influence future decisions.

I've gotten a few bans/warnings to my name, and one of them upset me because I was 100% in the right. I appealed it, Valve got involved. They did not end up removing it (which I still think is BS) but the mod that banned me was apologetic and admitted his misunderstanding of the situation. And even though it wasn't removed, that dialog is all on record for future Valve/mod decisions.

So, yeah always question moderation, always be civil, and be willing to accept the end result even if you don't like it. (Or, appeal through community support.) Being civil goes a very long way. If you end up with a history of bans and warnings and are constantly hostile, you're not likely to get much slack. But based on your OP I don't think that will be an issue fir you.
