Game discussions and gas lighting
Seems like a lot of people who complain about games, don't even own the game they are complaining about. I have a few in my library that I occasionally go to the discussions to check out, and always happen to see people who flame the devs, and gas light players, when they don't even own or play the game in any capacity. Some of the people who complain, have their profiles private, and the ones who don't have them private you can clearly see that they have not even played the game, let alone own it. Thoughts on this?

It’s called clown farming for people who are knowingly doing it, the folks who are serious about it you’re just trying to reason with unreasonable people at that point. It’s not an opinion if you haven’t played it. You’re just saying words at that stage. Agree though you have to actually know they haven’t played it - some people just outright say they haven’t and you’re like huh..?

Ultimately I feel sorry for these people.

If the game devs wanted they can remove the posts or set the forums to only be used by people that own the game as many already do.

Remember that a lot of games are on other platforms that they could be playing the game on and use steam forums instead as many of those don't have their own forums or could had refunded it after trying the game or are just using another account for forum access.

Those are fair points, but when you think of it why would they get banned in the first place? On top of that, it seems strange to play the game on say PS4 and then go to steam forums, rather than go to PSN forums? If they refunded the game, why would they actively go back and flame discussions? It all doesn't make sense to me.

i can totaly understand and relate to what you are saying about these individuals, it is something that makes me feel a bit iffy when i see certin regular people absolutly trashing or the oposite-extremly in love with the game-blind to all faults and the board theyre posting on shows they havent bought the game, however theres a couple i own that i dont have on steam natively- the one i remember is riders republic right now is on ubisofts launcher/platform,i think i got the base game on sale there for about £12 and ive spent a ton in DLC.

id never bash a game even if it truly was the most bugged non starting digital rubbish bin in the world as i dont have the ability to make a game,if its a developer whose doing everything they can in there ability to fix it, if theyre comunicating with the gamers they have a promising future in gaming, everyone starts somewhere dont they.
i might say what issues ive experienced, but only so i can help the devs find whats up.
like take the indie downhill biking game; descenders for example, early on the devs were asking us to record parts of the game where it goes weird and buggy, and asking for computer specs or error codes etc.
genuine fans just want to help suport devs whehter its bad or good help but its done with good intentions, people who just want to knock developers or players of a certin game without owning it are often seeking atention because good or bad atention works for them fine.

People flock to where the most fun is and that isn't the PS forums.

Personally I've never bashed a game either, I find it strange for people to do so. If you don't like the product, vote with your wallet. I get buying the game, and not liking it and leaving a negative review, but to constantly revisit the forums doesn't make sense.

Also, I would understand not going to a Ubisoft forum for a Ubisoft game, if it's on steam you might as well go to steam forums. Same goes for origin games and Epic Games.

I get criticizing a game, or perhaps its devs or even the publisher for the lack of transparency and communication with their communities, but I don't understand mindlessly droning to the forums and drumming up obvious bait? It's such a strange time frame to live in, people are so spiteful towards one another and there is hardly any trust anymore.

While it may sound wise to get rid of those people at the end of the day it is up to each poster to decide whether what they say or not is worth taking into consideration.

The forums are as open as the people who run them want them to be. Blame them for not taking it to task and dealing with it personally.

Never said to get rid of them in the first place, simply looking for ideas on the matter is all.

You can't see any such thing. All the mouse icon tells you is whether THAT account has the game. It doesn't tell you if the poster has the game on another Steam account or an entirely different system.

In other words, while a few may be trolling for the lulz, don't immediately assume that everyone pointing out issues with a game is doing for the same reasons.

Oh believe me, I know, but when you peak through their profile and never find a trace of said game, or a review of said game, it raises eyebrows.

Though, I will say its strange that many of the people who complain have private profiles.

People find that sort of stuff fun for one reason or another. I'm just happy I play games I like instead of do that all the time.

COnsiderations

1. Did they own but refund the game?
2. Do they own the game on another platform?
3. Did they play the game through family sharing?

Hint. FOcus on the arguments they make and don't try to sus out if they have a 'right' to make the arguments. Not saying the gas lighters and bandwagoners don't exist. God knows a rfair chunk of any group bashing a game are only doing so because they heard some youtuber make dubious claims and assertions based on rumors. But that's beside the point. Those sorts have no strong arguments to make and thusly dispmantling their arguments is enough. If they aren't making arguments then they aren't worth dealing with.

That's all understandable and fair, but why do it? I get coming back to a game that you refunded and seeing if anything has changed; its valid. Now, owning a game on another platform, then to go through the hassle of making a Steam account just to post? Like I stated earlier; Sure I understand coming from Origin, Ubisoft or Epic Games- but coming from PSN or Xbox seems fairly odd in my opinion. Further, they never state whether they came from another platform in the first place. Now I will say, I've seen some people come from Epic Games to see what the Steam Discussions are like, but they typically state that they are from another platform altogether.

Yeah, I respect the idea of dismantling their arguments, but it all seems so tiring. Its truly why I asked about it here, to see what others think of the matter.

That's it isn't it!?!? Point farming? Bro that makes so much sense, you just blew my mind. I know it sounds funny, and laugh if you'd like, but I'd never imagine that!

Takes all sorts in this world man. Usually found in steam forums unfortunately. You also don’t know if you’re talking to a 5 year old so there’s that..

I actually find these people interesting and they’re pretty easy to break down logically in terms of their arguments - sick hobby. If you don’t enjoy this hobby the easy option is to block so you can weed them out.
