RTS has never been lost nor have they been killed in any way, shape or form. Especially not by MOBAs, which are not even close to being the same genre. Last time I checked Starcraft 2 got released not too long ago, the new Homeworld very recently... Not sure what you're on right now...
The only thing which is annoying is that FPS seem to be taking all the place and popularity of all other genres. I'm a strategy game fan and short of low budged indies there is next to no game in that genre anymore. If you were in my position then you'd have something to whine about.
I don't think it's as simple as MOBA replaced RTS. More people play videogames. A lot of these people playing now, would never have played RTS then. There is still some overlap, but good luck convincng any of those to get into an RTS now while dodging the premium shops and engagement weeklies and so on.
This is why games don't have cult favourites newer than like 10-15 years. You can't sell somebody on an acquired taste or different style when they're trying to push through their own monetization malaise to get to the parts of the game they think they'll enjoy.
