Steam, Windows 7 - 2025
We're almost finished 2024 and we've had several Steam client updates as well as Windows 7 updates via UpdatePack7. So far Windows 7 seems to be running well and will carry me into 2025 at the very least.

I've been running Windows 7 since transitioning from XP after bypassing (and watching the fallout from) Vista. So far so good aside from DirectX12 and some driver restrictions.

I closely followed the roll-out of Win8, 8.1 and 10 waiting for a good time to transition to a newer OS, testing a few other options while I've been waiting (Linux, Windows Server, Tiny/Lite Windows). So far I haven't found anything that seems to worth the effort or privacy risks / compromise.

Windows 7 SP2/3?

In 2021 I found UpdatePack7 which is a monthly security pack for all editions of Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008R2 (seems to be in development since 2013) and have had very good results with it. There is a small ~1MB downloader program (v1.5.0.0) which will download and/or verify the update pack (~800MB). The latest release was three days ago (24.6.12) and no issues to report. It's a significant saving of bandwidth, time and drive space and I am very grateful for it's consistent and diligent development. It is essentially the SP3 that Win7 users were always waiting for.

If you're having issues on Windows 7 SP1, try running the following from CMD (as administrator) and post your results here.
chkdsk
sfc /verifyonly

Hint:
I find starting Steam offline is much faster and smoother. Here's my steps to starting Steam Offline:
1 - edit the file loginusers.vdf
... mine was located here: \Steam\config\loginusers.vdf
2 - change "WantsOfflineMode" from 0 to 1
3 - save and set file [Properties] to [Read-only]
4 - start steam to check

Also, to remove the red banner at the top I added this to my steam.exe shortcut:
-pretendeol-w10

no no no, try dism a program put on our pc's by microsoft and see if it requires the keys to install said updates, from microsofts updates catalog.

Deployment Image Servicing and Management isn't supposed to be used for getting paid updates for free. That's still called piracy. And though I didn't know what DISM was, it took me 5 seconds on a google search to find out and about 3 minutes of reading to figure out why it exist, what it does, and what it is and isn't for. And installing paid updates for the wrong OS is not what it's for. If you are using it for that, you are breaking the law.

Yes, and those updates in the catalog, require it. Why I posted the error of a non modified version of Windows 7 ultimate.

You, nor does anyone else, legally have a license for ESU since not sold to individuals.

Or in other words, they are engaging in, endorsing, and supporting Piracy!

Perhaps you should read what I post. I posted the error on a non modified version of Windows 7 ultimate.

You keep posting the UpdatePack 7 pictures, thinking it proves me wrong, when in reality is showing I am the one who is correct.

Next time, less insulting, more facts would better suite you not looking silly. I never said the updates wouldn't work, did I? I said try installing them legally.

But keep posting your illegal activities as you see fit, exposes you more.

I'd hardly call facts, rhetoric. But they are more persuasive than lies most times.

I know very well how to use DISM. Why I said, show me legally... installing said updates.

That's the difference between a trained and experienced person in a field, and one who is a self taught search engine one who didn't know how things worked before starting to use one.

Especially since said knowledge didn't come until such person is proven wrong, routinely, and has to resort to insulting due to it.
Funny, keeps editing their post showing their unlicensed illegal activities, since trying to prove themselves right in a futile attempt.

This Bidulless guy is an absolute clown, and i don't believe for one second he or she was in any way shape or form working in IT. If he or she was working in IT it must have been on the most insecure network ever. If anyone ever even suggested installing anything like "UPDATEPACK7" on a computer on my network he or she would be fired immediately. It's clear that this person is very young judging by the grammar. No adult uses rofl, xd leet speak after every other word.

You some how "missed" what they said: Try and download the updates directly from the catalog website then try and run them in Windows 7 WITHOUT USING DISM.

No modifications. No faffing around with little windows apps. Just download it and run it without doing anything else then show us what it says. If it is an update for Windows 7 as everyone claims then it should install and work without any errors.

an "IT pro"? i usually disregard anything they say the moment they start speaking, 99% of the time they dont know what they are talking about or doing, then find fixing their screwups and more, right in front of them is quite hilarious, seeing as their "IT pros" and im self taught.

also find it hilarious anyone pays those people and they take hours to days to set stuff up, or fix issues, then someone who isnt an "IT pro" pops in an fixes the nonsense in a few mins like it was something a toddler could have fixed.

ever see an "IT pro" google or youtube how to do stuff.... well i have, i have even seen techs who work on large machinery and are school taught, have to use google or youtube to fix, set something up, ect... its ridiculous.

anywho, ill take my own word, or others who know, over an IT pro who gets paid to not know what they are doing, one who paid for schooling and got almost nothing of experience or even learned what they were taught.

yep, different sectors of IT, working on different things throughout the different businesses and types of hardware, i find self taughts tend to be much more knowledgeable and truthful, were as "most" IT pro's who paid for schooling in their field, tend to be more biased, ego driven and hardly know what they are talking about and will claim there way is the only way, even if that way end up not working to begin with, or they end up stumbling over themselves when things dont go their way.

Speaking of said people, the other who didn't know how things worked, were adamant they did, posted evidence against their claims. Ah, that Windows 7 thread was amusing in the end before it was locked.

I'm fine with people being self taught, but not spreading lies about what the facts are.

if that was the case, you would also be correcting another person (in this thread, or others related to win 7), but you seem to ignore that person, because that person is against the thread (win 7 threads in general), despite even knowing basics, or at the very least is purposely playing the part.

:lunar2020thinkingtiger:

in the end.

microsoft gives them free to download.

people use dism to install stuff, others dont.

NT 6.1 kernels across all windows OS all work together and are the same exact OS running on that same kernel, ie... security updates and more (which are frequent updates), outerlayer programs such as windows itself, that have specific updates are related to UI, bugs, feature additions and the like.

now whether microsoft cares or doesnt is a whole other matter... i mean i bypassed their hardware requirements, they arent coming to my door to give me a beating and take my computer from me, i have been ignoring microsofts requirements and other bs for decades.

All I have to say, is DX12 and Windows 7. And the many pages of certain people being dead wrong. It was amusing, when they realized how wrong they were.
