What happens if other people click on a phishing link that they sent me? Will it affect my account?
I was not sure if it was legitimate or not, so I sent the link to my friend to discuss it. He told me it is a scam and that he accidentally clicked the link. He isn't joking, and I am worried whether it will affect my account that he clicked the link.

Valve wants users to contact support and support will take care of it.

We users would like the hijacked user to do it all themselves, leaving support to do other stuff and giving users a way to self help themselves if support takes to long to respond.

:winterbunny2023:

are we getting in the way of valve/steam support getting better.....

by blurring what is really needed..........

there is no where i shop that has volunteer
help if i need customer service..... why do we do it here....

paid staff replaced volunteers... are we stopping someone from working in a paid job....

are we getting in the way of improvements...

And yes anyone can pretend something is helpful it is up to the user to apply healthy skepticism and do there own research. When I see a link that is the same domain as the one I am already on than I am not going to question it. When I see a outside link mentioned I will type it in a search engine and see what comes up.
Visual confirmation of an URL alone is not enough because of this:

i agree... steam should present something official..

and at most we should just refer to click on steam client help...

if your being stressed and distracted by having your account hijacked
you dont need to play more guessing games with non official links...

There is no official process because support will do this stuff when a user recovers their account through support.

:winterbunny2023:

so if we dont post these links... who aint doing their job....
It is not Valves' responsibility to hold your hand. ESPECIALLY when they give you numerous support articles telling you what not to do. You're the one missing the point.....

"NEVER click unknown links from untrusted sources."

Paid mods cannot protect you from yourself, nor can Valve.

Noone is paid to tell you how to protect your account with basic internet safety and security. Do you open random junk emails and click links? I hope not.

i think you missing the point....

where is the steam official process...

we are customers telling people to click on links....

why isnt steam intercepting these posts
and providing the correct official details...

i could post any link and say its about account recovery...

No one here is posting incorrect info. that's your assumption. A WRONG one.

Yeah, you could post any link. If it's a phishing link. your account would probably get community banned. Again, no one here is doing that.

People come to the forums after being scammed. Every day there are posts about scams.

Users do things they shouldn't, use 3rd party trading sites, share account info, which is against the Steam ToS.

Exactly how is Valve supposed to prevent that?

I know how, thanks. You know what they'd do? Give the same links that were posted here. Not everyone on Steam is a scammer posting phishing links.

This sentiment against users completely disregards how much time bad actors spend trying to make things worse and how more numerous they are vs Valve.

Large corporations and governments actively create systems that impair security for their own ends. There are many systems and the interactions between them and users create myriad opportunities. It's not so easy to just blame the user anymore. It's easier to brake systems than it is to build them. Bad actors will always have an easier time causing problems than engineers will have designing problem-resilient systems.

I understand that some of these guys coming on here are being stupid and doing ♥♥♥♥ they shouldn't do, some of them ♥♥♥♥ that they know they shouldn't do, but most people are not up to speed on a what an intricate castle of hot ♥♥♥♥ the scamming enterprise has become.

You mean it's Valves' fault when users click any random link when Valve specifically says don't click any random link?

The users may not be up to speed, but guess whose job that is? Theirs.

Valve cannot force feed users the info.

Most of the users do things that's against the rules, trading outside of Steam, sharing their account info with others, how is either one Valve's fault or responsibility?

Exactly how do people get phisted in any other way.

Platform security is not the job of users.

Just a thought:

Ask yourself why Valve shifts the responsibility for many things onto the user. If something happens (and there have been multiple serious cases on this platform in the past) and you can't hold the platform operator responsible, it's a nice way to save legal fees and avoid disputes. Regardless of whether they are justified or not.

Users also have the burden of proof and that is where one of the core problem lies.

And ask yourself how many people (starting from the minimum age limit allowed here up to old age) know their way around, stay constantly informed about threats, read the forums or other sources and know how to help themselves. Especially when you consider that security risks are increasing exorbitantly. A large part of the topic is still only accessible to a small number of people who are really interested in it.

Just because something is written somewhere doesn't make it right. Legal corporate protection and actual practice (aka reality) are two different things.

It is not for nothing that we have authorities and laws around the world that take action against such things. Even if these are often circumvented or undermined.

Your account security is indeed YOUR responsibility and you agree to it when the account is created.

You are responsible for the confidentiality of your login and password and for the security of your computer system. Valve is not responsible for the use of your password and Account or for all of the communication and activity on Steam that results from use of your login name and password by you, or by any person to whom you may have intentionally or by negligence disclosed your login and/or password in violation of this confidentiality provision. Unless it results from Valve’s negligence or fault, Valve is not responsible for the use of your Account by a person who fraudulently used your login and password without your permission.

https://store.steampowered.com/subscriber_agreement/#1

Further, users not informing themselves and clicking on every link they get doesn't mean the platform isn't secure.

Valve cannot stop scammers from being scammers. It's a problem with human nature.

EDIT:
10 year account with 6K games and still thinks that account security isn't your responsibility.
