Steam listened - MASSIVE updates to family sharing in Steam beta
https://steamcommunity.com/app/593110/eventcomments/7179373376269250889/

Some very interesting changes such as

Family Sharing enables you to play games from other family members' libraries, even if they are online playing another game. If your family library has multiple copies of a game, multiple members of the family can play that game at the same time. For a more detailed look at how Family Sharing works, see the FAQ below.

You will need to opt into the steam beta if you want to try them out

Incoming complains of people who 'traded' for family sharing upset at them no longer being able to share the library with their so totally legit family member living far, far away.

What if that was genuinely the case?

I'm not worried about it, as members of my steam family thing live under one roof, but what if one moves out of the country? They won't be able to access my games for some arbitrary reason.
It's not really arbitrary because there is a very good reason for that limitation. For the small amount of people it would affect it puts a damper on the rampant abuse that would occur if it was not in place.

.

As for your comparison about consoles a lot of games on it are digital only or a option but even if you get a physical disc they are linked to one account when you register them these days for most.

Which games would that be?
Dont know a single one which would be tied to a single Account with it's physical copy.

Life isn't fair, unfortunately.

I'm amazed at the fact they've given so much leeway, allowing to family share within the same country. I would have not been surprised if they had restricted this family sharing only within the same household or local network.

They haven't and they won't dissapear. We'll see more or less depending on how the pendulum swings, but devs are always going to want to exersice control over their game.

they havent yes... claiming they wont, is your opinion.

They've only been growing so claiming they aren't going anywhere has more weight than saying they will definitely disappear.

Every battle.net game for instance, lots of EA, Ubisoft games, etc

Thats how Starcraft, Diablo 2, etc all worked for instance. Also every MMO, many online focused games, etc.

Others you had only a certain number of activations and then your key became useless

And you can't back out of it to use the old Family Sharing. They'll sunset that soon anyways.

Already happening. Who knew westerners had so many "family members" in 2nd/3rd world counties/cheap Steam regions. :lunar2020playfuldog:

It's available now as a separate beta in the settings.

It will go live for everyone in about 6-8 weeks.

ack spoke too soon. So you still can't play different games from the same account, which is understandable...just that I bought all the games in one account and only recently tried to separate accounts for my sons.

So I'm still stuck with not being able to play Last Epoch on another account (because this game doesn't allow Family Sharing apparently) while my son plays Monster Hunter: Rise on the main account. Wish there was a way I can just like transfer a game from one Steam account to another, such as Monster Hunter: Rise as only my son plays that game and I got it for him. If I knew prior, I would have bought this title on the other Steam account grrr...

Ah well...

It was never their intention to allow one account play simultaneously on multiple devices and even Valve stated, "Steam Families does not address this feature request."

Understood...but at least allow transfer of said games from one account to another then if its in the Family? I mean why not?

I mean I did buy the game, why not then let me transfer a game I bought for my kid but I would never play to his account so that I can play my game in peace and he can play his.

Transferring licenses has never been a thing and it would be even worse than it is now with inventory items that scammers hijack.

I said WITHIN FAMILY. I don't see how this is an issue with scammers?

Because a scammer can add someone "within the family" transfer the games, remove the user.

This is not true. Now that we have the Family Sharing Beta that I just tried out, you can authorize it and even IP restrict it to be within one location.
