Results of the latest Steam UI/UX update
- I removed the Steam client from autorun on startup.
Don't need the app sitting there all the time now since it's resource heavy. I'm not comfortable with UI/chromium hogging over 1GB+ RAM right after startup (and even more if I browse the store).
- I only run it when I need to play the game
- I only use the shortcut with -vgui parameter so that I don't have to deal with the bloated and laggy interface.

Good job with the latest update Steam, as result I will be using Steam less than before.

Wonder if anyone did the same. Wonder if Gaben is actually okay with this.

1 and 2 I've been doing since I started using Steam.

Honestly? Outside of games and store, I do not think I actually used at least half of other Steam functions. Never had a reason to. As long as those two work, I'm not going to have any complaints.

I wonder how hard it would be if they added an option to use old UI into settings. Those who want to switch back to lightweight client would have the choice and those would be okay with new UI would just keep using it.

Everyone would be happy.

In a sense this whole situation reminds me of old and new Reddit in a sense. One don't have to go far to find some parallels.

You know what situation this reminds me off......the last time the steam client got an overhaul....and the time before that, and before that, and before that..........

For now, I use it like before, with the -vgui parameter. Once Valve breaks it and forces us to use the new interface, I too will have to only run it when playing games.

On a side note, though, Gaben doesn't care at all. Most people will just accept the change and there won't be any financial impact for Valve.

I remember those. And while those were a bit controversial too, they at least got the philosophy behind the changes right. In comparison, this doesn't feels like work of competent UX designer.
We are at the point where whole purpose of game Steam client gets reversed and its usability is no longer main priority.

You know, in a sense, I honestly think mobile client is now a lot better than this new UI - at least because someone thought about the needs of mobile users there.

Yeah, you are probably right. Sadly for all the other users who thinks otherwise. Even if it was 1 or 2% of userbase, it's still millions of people. And I doubt it's that low.

But I clearly remember some missteps where the community reverted Steam decisions - be it paid mods fiasco or controversy about adult games approving process. So it's not like big backlash can't have any favorable results. They still need their users afterall.

Even if it would meant keeping both UIs available side by side.
