Memory Leak? - Steam Web Helper using 6GB of RAM
I left my PC on over night, went out for the day, and came back to my PC to find my RAM sitting at 75% usage while idle. A single steam web helper process had 6GB reserved.

This new UI isn't just a memory hog - it actively has a memory leak. I can deal with new visuals. I can put aside my disgust at web-based design infecting the rest of the steam UI. But this is an actual issue, and should have been caught in testing.

It is pretty much annoying, yes.

Steam "accumulates" Memory Useage over time.

Steam begins with about 700 MB in RAM Cache which is ok, but later keeps about 2.4 GB of RAM occupied.. this is way too much..!!

Instead that Steam clears up memory, it accumulates .. aven 2.4 GB of RAM are usedd when I simply browse the Steam Forums..

No, is not ok.
700 is really too much. Even 300 is high for something but 700 is over the top.

doesn't help.
They aren't going to even try to fix Windows 7 anymore when their support is mere weeks away from being dropped.
it doesn't fix it because it's a server issue... confirmed by support.

This might come as news to you but 700 MB of ram for a game launcher is not only perfectly fine but also completely acceptable. The epic Games launcher for example uses 900 MB of ram just sitting idle. The rockstar games launcher uses a little over 1GB just sitting idle. Battle.net's launcher uses about 1.2 GB of ram. All modern game launchers use around 700 - 1GB of ram. Steam is actually better at ram usage than the competition.
I will offer you a different opinion - they're "all wrong!"
Same with me
Have 32GB RAM and have ram crash
and kill the steam can fix

Unfortunately we can not change this aspect of modern computer launchers in 2023. It is what it is and we have to cope with it. I recently upgraded my main computer to 32GB ram as of 3 months ago and my next computer when ever I build an upgrade will have a minimum of 64GB of ram, hopefully 128GB.

Lol 0 aspect in optimization.

2040 1tb ram is the standard lol
right, said I'd get back to you...

after about 16 days it's using about 4GB.

That's probably because you leave your computer on all the time (you told us in other threads that you do that). Have you ever tried turning your computer off when you goto sleep like a normal person? You probably left Steam open for 16 days too. That's most likely your problem. Normal people don't do that.
it's not normal to have to restart a PC every day lol...

just because you patch the leak doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
Wow, leaving one's PC on for over two weeks... The new Steam version sucks horribly and is ugly as hell, but your problem is bigger than that.

Why would you leave your computer on, sitting idle, consuming power and producing heat for no reason when you're asleep and not even able to use it? That's so very weird.
because I am using it. I don't sleep well and like some nice ambient noise, so I built my PC with things like a passive PSU, hign-end hard drive, and high airflow case to allow it to do so.

like imagine having told steven harking(RIP) he has to restart his voice every day... imagine having to turn off the hospital equipment every day because of a memory leak...

.... what? Why would you try to group together a home computer used for gaming with essential life equipment? That's not even the same thing.
they're they same systems!!

maybe you remember how everyone was talking ♥♥♥♥ when all the healthcare systems that were running windows XP still got hit my ransomware?

well ya, maybe something as important as that should be totally up to date... but maybe something like my gaming PC can be just a little out of date and still be allowed to access the games I've been playing for decades... or I guess steam is more important than "essential life equipment" now?!

So now you're saying that you use your home computer to control your voice and to also control something to do with medical equipment that you require to stay alive?
no, you're saying that.

No.. you just did..
you're correct, I did say no.

edit: and omg idk how I lost you.. they're all the same systems!
"medical equipment" is just a little PC in a fancy box.

I already told you why I do
Nope. You never told us why you leave your computer on.

Αναρτήθηκε αρχικά από kingjames488:
why are you trying to focus on why I leave my PC on rather than why steam leaks like 4GB of memory over only 16 days?
I'm focusing on that because that's why steam is leaking ram for you! ... I'm about to burst out laughing here that you can't even connect the two.

If you would either restart your computer or restart steam on a regular basis like everyone else you wouldn't see steam leaking ram excessively.
yes I did... check post #360.

I'm also kinda laughing at how you think "restarting on a regular basis" is a reasonable solution to an obvious memory leak... but like I said I guess that's how YOU PEOPLE(yes YOU PEOPLE!!!) have been conditioned to think... that things just aren't expected to work and should need constant updates and restarts...

last I checked roller coaster tycoon still worked... probably because chris sawyer was no hack and assmebly still works.
computers are designed to run 24/7 365 days a year....
ya know.. just like steam computers or any other business

or do your pc parts tell you they need sleep 8 hours a day.... LOL

point 1...
- you should not have to restart steam to reset your ram.....

current ram usage 1065mb while not doing anything...
