Memory ♥♥♥♥? - Steam Web Helper using 6GB of RAM

I left my PC on over night, went out for the day, and came back to my PC to find my RAM sitting at 75% usage while idle. A single steam web helper process had 6GB reserved.

This new UI isn't just a memory hog - it actively has a memory ♥♥♥♥. I can deal with new visuals. I can put aside my disgust at web-based design infecting the rest of the steam UI. But this is an actual issue, and should have been caught in testing.

I've got 4gb and struggling. Since the UI update removed the music player I have to use other media players, aside from the new UI being more heavy on the system.

I think overtime the methods to bring the old UI back will break. I tried installing the latest method with the 2018 friends list (because in September it stopped working), but I find it as bad as the new UI, since it has the old chat from 2018 and it sucks.

I just dont use chat anymore. Thats what valve wants, right? Less engagement?

Hm. So I was watching my processes past couple of days (without having setup a cron) and Steam on the deck has been more well behaved. So I have a different theory now that I will watch out for. Could it be some of the larger, more obsessively updating games? Like, what if Steam has an inefficiently written bittorrent client for distributing updates that sucks up a lot of CPU and RAM when updating. Next time it happens, I'll check for updates and network usage too. Or maybe they watch this thread..

CPU usage under 10%, memory usage a "mere" gig per web helper... I restarted and right now Metro is updating and the CPU usage did indeed spike a fair amount. Memory usage is still lower though.

You mean for the dozen or so users who have runaway memory usage? I'll reiterate that Valve desperately needs to update CEF; perhaps they can also remove a lot of polyfills from the code in the process.

It's not normal for a program to have a memory ♥♥♥♥ causing the usage to spike to upwards of 6 GIgs, super atrocious.

Is this your standard response for any product defect in the marketplace? Since you have no clue "why" each person lodges their own individual complaint, which all have patterns showing this is a very prevalent issue -- you should just return to that "Love Thy Neighbor" phrase to couple with your handle. Your "Neighbors" are having Steam Client issues. Don't be part of the problem, be part of the solution.

If it is much more than 1GB then there's something not right.

if you dont turn off your computer it will just rise higher and higher...
i got to 4gig and opened up other high ram use software and steam
didnt release anything.. while it was doing nothing....

if you turn your computer off every day most wont notice it..

play a game jump around in discussions seems to add 30mb
clumps along with the drip here and there..

restarted steam recently.. 485mb usage at the moment...

interesting... just played a regular game and it went to 497mb
it would usually be about 520mb
