New Steam Client Using 490 MB's of Memory???
It's bad enough this thing has to always be running in the background even when I'm not downloading updates or purchasing games, but this release after all the Steam services are added up is now using 522 MB's of system memory in Windows 10.

Try opening an overlay while in game. It's almost a full GB of memory being used because everything has it's own separate window now. You can't go from a discussion page to a web browser anymore, they've separated everything. When your game launching client starts using more RAM than some of your actual games, you know Valve have failed.

The resource management of this application is horrendous. Steam used to be this nice small application that simply sat in your system tray. Every now and then you would use it to buy games. Now the stupid thing is acting like it's a separate operating system, but an operating system like Windows ME...

400? mines using 650mb.

i'd like to be able to toggle back to the old version.

sure this one is flashy and all but i don't use steam to drink my pc resources, its a game library man. its not supposed to take more resources than a game. loool

edit 814 now lol
edit2 - after disabling everything that makes the new ui interesting, its gone down to 519, and seems to have stopped leaking.
edit3 - well something got changed. using 129 now. 70mb while in game.

Yep, 650-700 seems to be the norm. Why does this use so much, though...?

It's because this whole client is web based now. It was close to it before this update but I'm pretty sure this was the full conversion. It's pretty (imo) but any time you switch from a dedicated desktop application to something that is based primarily on what I imagine is ReactJS performance suffers tremendously. That's especially an issue when it ties into resource heavy software like games. Valve started down this path years back and they have yet to show any sign of stopping unfortunately. It's one of the most harebrained moves they have pulled imho.

Oh, its about to get much worse when they fully close Windows 7 support.

No reason to hold back the optimization and things are going to get even more needlessly bloated.

It uses Chromium now like Google Chrome, kinda speaks for itself...

jesus christ really?

ValvE has been around since forever, there's no way they didn't know that would be a bad idea.

Thats the whole reason they're dropping Windows 7 soon, and inevitably 10 at some point in the future

Its all for UI and extra features instead of just focusing on being a launcher

I have 32GB of Ram. The new Steam Client seems to be working nice and smoothly. People with say 8 or only 4GB Ram might find the new client is impacting their system.

Why the F does the login screen have an animated background now? So ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wasteful.

This seems to be confusing people but it’s been using CEF for years.

Good for you!

That doesn't change the fact that it's an objectively bad performance downgrade, which in software development (and considering that this apparently WAS tested for a decent amount of time in Beta,) is a BAD THING.

That's not really an issue unless you have an insignificant amount of ram. Browser tabs can easily consume 500-700MBs especially if you're watching or pause a video.

A long time ago 16GBs was recommended for PC gaming. These days I'd say 24-36 gb is recommended for gaming. 500MBs is nothing, how much do you have installed?
