So when is someone from Valve going to clarify what exactly will stop working for Windows 7 users next year?
If I get locked out of my games I'm going to be PISSED, and even if the other storefronts are bad I will still be taking my money elsewhere. Probably GOG, at least they offer browser downloads for older systems.

Yeah no, I'd lose the money I spent on my purchases. It's not that simple.
It is pretty simple you either agree to their terms or not.

You have many options

Linux
Steam OS
Windows
Mac Os

Dual boot with any desired operating system you have to continue to be part of steam

With a 500GB hdd? Don't think that'll go well... Does steem get to determine my hardware too? Oh boy, here we go again...

Quit acting all innocent, we know you're not even if ignorant. You've been told in countless threads the answers.

Update, or lose access, you agreed to the service rules, since all the games require a service.

Wrong. Remember the mandatory tick box you MUST check with each purchase? That was you agreeing to use the licensing to access those games under the conditions set by Valve and the publishers. One of those conditions is maintaining an up-to-date operating system to access the launcher and to access your licenses via that launcher.

So it's a conditional lease then...
You can call it whatever you want, it still doesn't change the fact that this is how Steam has worked since its inception, and on a broader scale, software licensing and online services as a whole for many, many years.

Easy. If you cannot keep your system updated, you cannot access Steam Services. It's their service.

You also agreed to it each and every time you bought a game.

You know this, you've been told this thousands of times already, repeatedly.

I think it's time you started to read it this time. Not that hard to understand if a child can understand it.

And they're my games. And it's my system. I read just fine thanks.
Not really, they are not your games. Those games belong to the IP holder. You have the files for those games on your computer. You can do whatever you want with those files, within legality of course. But in order to access and play the game that those files make up - well you need to follow the terms of the licensing contract you agreed to when you made your Steam account, and purchased those games.

Literally any non-drm game requires no service.
76561198083042378 lähetti viestin:
So a lease then? Or a subscription? Oh hell, if I'm licensing it does that mean I can use the IP as long as I paid for it? It's all just so confusing... All I know for sure is that if it comes with terms then it isn't ownership, and not a purchase...

Look up software sales. The model hasn't changed for forty years. It is not a lease, nor a subscription. Those are specific models not applied generally to software. Although a subscription model in terms of how payment and access is managed can be additionally applied, the licensing terms remain the same regardless of the payment model. You license access to the software. You don't own it. Nor do you get to use the IP the software is associated with (unless specifically granted as part of your software license).

Licensing IP and licensing software using an IP are not the same thing.

Now, leasing, subscribing, or one-time payment access, are all forms of purchasing. Again, if you struggle to understand this, seek help. The CAB (or similar regional alternative) will be happy to assist you.

With Win10 and 11 you need at most 256 GB and even that is overkill for the OS. Also get a SSD too.
A 500 GB harddrive with windows is completely fine.

If I can dual boot a small OS as the secondary OS on a 128GB old SSD, people can do it on a 500GB HDD.

I've even booted alternate OS's using a 4GB bootable USB 3.0 stick, which has been on motherboards for a very long time.

It seems more suspicious that when most people say they "cant upgrade", the goalpost gets moved; when its noted their model can install it, another thing magically prevents it. someone else comes along, says that's not an issue - people with less specs installed; suddenly, yet another thing magically prevents it all without actually trying the upgrade. Rinse & repeat.

Most of the individuals that claim to be unable to run/install the upgrade to 10 appear to be hub banned, game banned, or have numerous run-ins with moderation and suddenly join the anti upgrade crowd after hub removal with goalposting shifts when noted their systems/parts/resources can run win10. I have not seen someone that legitimately can't install a win10 upgrade due to not meeting the requirements. To most, it appears that those being moderated are just trying to troll steam or "retaliate" for the actions against the account.

I don't believe most are being honest, if a system has 7 on it, then it's safe to say they can run Win10, turn on performance mode, and disable startup items/services that may impact older PCs. Very easy to do.

No, Valve likewise does not own the IP, unless it's a game they developed. The IP holder determines the conditions of the licensing, which includes the DRM and if Steam is required to run the game.

And posting on the forums will not change the fact that Microsoft retires old Windows versions in favor of new ones, nor does it change how software, including games, are licensed. And it never will. Only the legal system can do that - and the legal system doesn't act upon random forum posts.

Again that is your problem not the companies or the people here.
end of support for operating system will always happen. steam might still work for a sort while until update what makes it no longer work on windows 7/8 or it will continue working but over time become unstable. but overall if you look at every other platform drivers and so on, either stopped support for older systems or in process of dropping support or have some support for a certain amount of time, my best bet is to find out by those companies for how long - the reason for this, eventually might be more and more people who didn't want to upgrade to windows 10 or 11 or what ever other system there is or whatever other reason.

It's a you problem, why should others check this for you when they are on a supported operating system.

You can do this yourself, you where given instructions on how.
