You're forgetting that the disc was useless. Trying a disc install would still muck it up. You need to use the CD key and even that wasn't working properly.
I'm not forgetting. That's the point I'm making. I wouldn't have known that I was buying a useless disc.
Again....this was true even before Steam. Do you not remember having to download patches, even though you had the disc? Because I do.....and if you made a mistake and installed the wrong patch? Oh boy.

Yes, I mentioned how long it took me to download the patch for Homeworld 2. The thing is I could still install and play Homewold 2 without the patch.

I recall ReVoltion had a bug where the levels would loop.

I discovered and reported a bug in O.R.B.: Offworld Resource Base that a patch was then made to fix.

Me thinks you're wearing rose-tinted glasses. You're surely weren't playing it properly.

The point remains that the discs for those games were not useless just because a patch was released separately.

How much use was there for the retail disc of HL2? Would the installer even load the files from the disc or force you download them anyway?

The data on the disc is ancient by the time it gets to a store shelf.....and that goes for any pre-Steam game too.

So, you've been PC gaming since 1986 and didn't know that the data on CDs ages?

So you're comparing a disc that you can install and play the game from, with a disc that you can't even install from. And you've concluded that because a patch can be downloaded separately the former is useless since the files aren't the latest version... That's what I read. What am I missing?

You're missing the fact that you don't even need the disc, only the key in most cases.

You still didn't answer the question, either.

?

So, you've been PC gaming since 1986 and didn't know that the data on CDs ages?

Most stores would even TELL YOU that you're gonna need patches as the files on the disc were obsolete.

You not knowing this leaves me with severe doubt of your 1986 claim.

I want to use the disc. That's where the files are. I don't want to obtain the files when I already have the files.

What question was that?

I did answer that. I am well aware that patches exist. I've talked about the difficulty I had downloading them on the terrible dial up connection I had back in 2004. The existence of patches doesn't negate the usefulness of discs.

My father got me started on a Tandy 1000. I've still got the Tandy 2500 SX/33 my father upgraded to a few years later.

You have old files, not the correct files.
Komarimaru 15 dez. 2024 às 16:11
I'd not bring up Tandy, Commodore etc. Those were closed hardware ecosystems where didn't have to worry about drivers, missing hardware components etc. Even then though, they mailed out patch disks a few times lol.

I have files I can install and play. That is more than the files on the retail disc of HL2 can do.

Still an IBM PC Compatible Home Computer.
I have definitely added sound cards, changed HDDs, installed newer CD drives, and had to load drivers in config.sys.
They were as configurable as any AT form factor desktop running DOS.

All of which used the same hardware configs.

MDA for the video output of CGA, EGA and Tandy Enhanced, same 8086 processor, etc etc. And only on the Tandy 1000 and above. Curious how you added a sound card with no slots to add one in though except the sideways 8 bit ISA slot(which didn't support such things), was built into the motherboard. Hence, Tandy Sound Option in games...

Now if a Tandy 2000, possible to believe. But still rather doubtful since required special card slide in slot. None I know of as a sound card.

So, did all that...but having to download game patches is a deal breaker?

There's onboard sound. There's also 3 expansion slots on an ISA daughter board where I put a SoundBlaster.

No, I'm fine with patching games. When did I indicate otherwise?
