Download size is broken
It shows how much disk usage going to be rather than download size till you start downloading or check from library.

Valve, please fix.

EDIT: it has been fixed now with the April 1 update:

This update was rereleased on April 1st to fix a display issue on game details page for games with queued updates.

Instructions unclear. Download size stuck in toaster oven.

More seriously, are you complaining that Steam is telling you how much space you need to download and unpack the game? I'm really not sure I get exactly what you seem to be complaining about.

In downloads, it shows 61 GB update but it is 17 GB. I don't care how much space I will need to download, this happened after last update.

That's not a bug. It is you who don't get what is happening.

The download is 17 gigs but the total amount on your HD for the game is going to be 61 gigs when you're done. And the reason why the information of the total amount is important is because some people don't have infinite space left on whatever HD or SDD they install to and if they don't have enough the download is simply going to fail.

It is a bug, it shows different amounts when you check specifically from library. They will fix this no matter what, it is ironic because you are the one who don't understand what's happening

It's smaller to download than install, doors that make sense? Once uncompressed, so it can be run, it take more space.

They didn't mention anything about that in update notes. You go to library, click to the game and you see 17 GB update required. You go to "Manage Downloads" it shows 61 GB download scheduled. They have never shown how much disk space it is going to require till you start downloading and since there is no mention of new download system, this is a bug.

Wait and see, they will reverse this.

Look buddy... I'm not going to falsely pretend like I really did understand what you were talking about at first. That's exactly why I asked for more info on your part. The more you post tho and the easier it is to see that you simply don't understand how computers work. Let me draw you a picture just this once, to give you the benefit of the doubt.

What you want to do is update a game. An update imply that you already have the game and that the update is going to add to what is already there. But your own update might be different from someone else. If I were to update the same game but did not update it the last three or four updates then I would personally need to download something bigger to make up for the difference. So they tell you straight away that you will need to download 17gb of data to bring your game up to date. That's where that number come from

Once that start, they tell you that the end result will be 61gb of data on your disk. But even that is not the total amount of space you need to download the file. That's just the end result after everything in done. In reality what is happening is that the file you are downloading is what is called an archive (with an extension like .zip, .rar, .ace, etc) which allow you to download a smaller file for the same result. However, your computer need to unpack those files from that archive before they can be used and so your computer actually need roughly twice the size of the update (first to get it, then to unpack). So it does that and then apply the update (either by overwriting old files or (more commonly) adding new ones). Once that is done, the client is going to double check (verify) your game to make sure there has not been a writing error (yes, this can happen) and that your game check out and is ready to use without problems. Then in the very end the client should get rid of the excess data it downloaded (mainly: the archive itself).

So all of those numbers are actually correct and leggit. And it has been like this for as long as computers existed, more or less. the Steam client is simply more transparent about the whole process that the vast majority of other installers out there...

You still don't understand do you? Manage downloads section has always shown the total download size rather than what disk usage going to be, stop acting like you know something. We are not making progress, you don't know anything lil bro.

Which game exactly? Since it will show you how much is required to download, then how much of the files are going to be patched.

Well, other than Ready or Not's new DLC coming out a few days ago, none of those have had a large patch.

Maybe a screenshot of the download section would be best to show the oddness you are having when attempt it.

It's times like these I wish Steam would remove the extra information and go back to simply stating Downloading or Updating.

Here, an example.

The update, I am downloading, I have completed 6.8GB of the 8.6GB of data. To the right of that, I have Patched, 7.2GB of the 40.4GB of Game Data I already have installed. The right, is what's already installed and how much of it is being patched.

Before you start downloading, when it is scheduled, it shows 61 GB but when you start downloading it shows 17 GB download and 61 GB patch on drive. What I'm saying is, it has always showed download size when it is scheduled, not how much its going to use the drive.

Yes, they give more information now. That's not broken, that's intended. You now see how big the patch is, then see how much of the installed data is being patched. Working as intended.
