Buying a game before a sale
Hello, I've been eyeing a game I really want to buy but I wanted to wait till it went on sale, which it sadly didn't in autumn, so I'd really like to buy it now, which is why I have this question.

Is it possible to buy a game a week before a sale, then have steam refund you the difference once the sale starts?

You never get refunded the difference. It would always be a regular full refund and repurchase, assuming you have not played it more than 2 hours and not owned it longer than 2 weeks.

Winter Sales will start in 5 days or so I suggest you wait for that.

To answer your question, no that's not possible, but you can refund a game for the sake of buying it again cheaper, as long as you are eligible for a refund (less than 2 hours of playtime and less than 2 weeks since purchase).

Dang. I've seen some people get refunded a game if they bought it right before a sale, so I was wondering how far it went. Welp, thanks

It's just a dumb move. You can't play it anyway since you need to stay below 2 hours of playtime, and games rarely get more expensive during a sale.

Also, depending on the game, there might be other shops as well. Steam isn't the only place that sells games with sales.

I'm assuming the only way to find out if a game goes on sale during seasonal sales is to wait until the sale starts, right?

Or just use Valve's own announcements now...

I wonder what game? Because it wouldn't be impossible that your expectation that it go on sale might be wishful thinking.

At any rate sometimes you have to make a decision, is saving a few dollars worth waiting?

And what I mean is a $60 game, at 50% off, ok you save 30 dollars. How much hassle and waiting is $30 worth it to you? Days, weeks, months? How long does it take you to earn 30 dollars? People seem to get hyper focused on sales, and sale prices. But in the grand scheme of things $30 might not really matter one way or the other.

If you want a game badly enough, maybe the full retail price is worth it. Especially if you play it a ton before it actually goes on sale.

The game is Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising and I want to get the deluxe edition, which costs 75 and has all the dlc characters. The reason I don't just buy the base game, which is 50, is because the character pass is individually 50 bucks, and I would like to play the dlc characters without buying the game twice.

It's currently the day of its first year anniversary, so I will wait and see if it goes on sale at any point today at least.

All that means is that they refunded a game they purchased at a higher price which then went on sale a couple of days later.

As long as they are within the refund limits, although exceptions can be made if outside of the limits, they are refunded the original purchase price and the game is removed from their library.

Once everything is finalised they can re-add the same game to their cart, click confirm and purchase at the sale price.

We do not consider it abuse to request a refund on a title that was purchased just before a sale and then immediately rebuying that title for the sale price.

The game was 50% off two months ago and will likely be discounted to that rate or maybe more come the winter sale in a week.
