The way The Game Awards work is they ask a bunch of groups that review games to send their editor in chief over and have all the editors in chief talk about which game is the best.

So they're already limited to very high profile games (because other employees would be reviewing other games if they were reviewed by that outlet at all) and also limiting it to high profile games that a majority of game-reviewing outlets have reviewed because reviewers aren't going to vote for a game they haven't played to win an award.

So the reason Astro Bot won so many awards is that it's the best game that most of the reviewers had played.

No need for a conspiracy. No need for someone to get bribed or blackmailed. That's just how it happens. It's a high quality game and most review outlets have reviewed it. Other games might be higher quality, but they weren't as widely reviewed, so they got less votes.

Happens on this forum every time as well. Apparently, the video game awards where gamers vote are rigged because, as usual, the game that the OP wanted to win, didn't.

It got action goty even though Yakuza 8 and STALKER 2 are better by miles.

And if wukong is sooo awesome then why out of 20 million sales, 19 are from China?
By this logic, Genshin Impact and ZZZ are better than Ff14, CSGO and GTA Online. And chinese MMO's should constantly win everything.

1 million in the west is the same number Star Wars Outlaws sold. It's a flop these days.

It has nothing to do with me wanting a certain game to win. Astrobot, a mobile card game, and a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ DLC should not have even been in the running.

"GAME" of the Year, and they included a damn DLC. That should immediately send up red flags.
